Bexar Voters Reject Financing for UT Medical School Project
Public officials report shock as Bexar County voters turn down a 27 million dollar financing plan for the South Texas Medical School and teaching hospital complex. County Judge Blair Reeves says the decision reflects tax worries and will force officials to seek alternate financing methods. The rejection halts 15.6 million for the teaching hospital and 12 million for the medical school, threatening UT system expansion. Frank C. Ervin Jr. notes UT regents must inform the legislature that the medical school cannot open without the required teaching hospital. Reeves indicates county commissioners will meet soon to explore options, while UT may not reconsider placing the project in Texas.
