Frontier weddings on the Texas frontier a humble custom
Texas historian Betty J Mills notes weddings in early Texas happened at home or on a buggy with guests from a 30 to 40 mile radius. Invitations were mouth to mouth and travel could reach 200 miles for a license. Brides wove gowns, fabrics were bought from peddlers or mail catalogs, and celebrations featured feasts and dancing lasting until morning. Noah Smithwick described Texans as hospitable with large hearts despite small houses.
