Baytown council continued the 2008-09 budget discussion focusing on expanding recycling efforts and attracting visitors. The budget shows over 45 000 in recycling revenue and more than 497 000 for residential recycling under the sanitation fund. The curbside program began in June with Waste Management collecting 21 18 gallon tubs of newspaper plastic bottles and aluminum cans weekly, diverting about 78 tons from landfills. Suggestion emerges for a seven day a week recycling center possibly accepting glass, with councilmembers urging easier resident participation and ongoing education.
Freshmen at Goose Creek Memorial and Ross S Sterling High Schools will receive guidance from upperclassmen at Fish Camp this month. Sterling hosts August 21 4 to 6 30 p m while Goose Creek Memorial holds August 14 1 to 5 p m in the gym. Robert E Lee will not hold a Fish Camp.
Barbers Hill school board adopted a 1.33 tax rate for 2008, unchanged from last year. Superintendent John Koonce said the overall rate remains the same for taxpayers, though an October 11 rollback election will occur. The rate allocates 1.06 for maintenance and operations and 0.27 for interest and sinking.
