The annual Y M C A financial drive begins Monday October 15 led by co chairmen Henry W. Owen Jr and George B Wolstenholme. The campaign seeks 3500 in contributions to support leagues tournaments and activities for boys and young men in the city through broad community services.
Maine fish and game commissioner George J. Stobie says southern coastal and central counties will have abundant deer when the season opens October 16, while the northern big woods show heavy losses. Wardens report deer declines in Hancock Oxford and Washington counties. bear populations are plentiful statewide. Open dates vary by county. Commander Robert W. Ferrell, U.S. Navy, has returned from Boston.
A large bull moose appeared Monday morning in Marshall and Getchell streets area, first seen at 6 am near 217 High Street. Residents along High Street and Getchell watched from homes as the moose walked the sidewalk then entered fields and woods, with a sighting near Mr. Morse’s truck prompting it to move off. The animal traced a path from the Clark residence to the former Daley homestead yard and toward Richardson Street before vanishing.
At Frank R. Bailey’s request a ballot inspection in Augusta reviewed a September election in Woolwich and nearby towns. Ernest A. Allen gained votes, tallying 804 to Bailey 788 after disputes. Bailey congratulated Allen, and Allen expected no further challenges to his victory.
The Maine Agricultural Experiment Station issues Bulletin 371 comparing the cost and methods of cooking a typical Maine day's meals by electricity versus utensils. It contrasts recommendations with practical cost implications for operators.
Mrs Lucelia E. Blake first Past Pocahontas of Ramona council is raised to Great Pocahontas of Maine D O P a reception and dance with 125 guests in Red Men hall. The event featured leaders from Cumberland Mills Falmouth Lewiston Orrs Island Portland South Portland Wiscasset Woodsford and Yarmouth with music by local performers.
Edward E. Sonia and party hunting near Carlton's pond in Dresden, Maine, encountered a half grown bull moose within 15 feet. The animal watched then retreated after a loud Boo as Sonia and companions waited by a blind. Nearby, Douglass Dearborn and Miss Susan Breck of New York accompanied Sonia.
Woolwich residents allege ex senator and Governor's Council member Frank W Carlton pressured ERA Administrator John A McDonough to derail a federal road project. At a special meeting they voted to appeal to Governor Louis J Brann and Interior Secretary Hopkins, with Day Reed signing resolutions.
The Twin County 4-H clubs held a county contest at Auburn Grange Hall with dinner for 265. Woolwich Moatsweag and West Bath Keep-It-Up Boys and Girls’ Club were represented amid displays of canning, needlework, and garden products. Prizes and seals of achievement crowned junior and senior projects in bean, canning, chick raising, dairy, garden, and potato categories led by Charles H. White and Marian Rose among others.
Bath Memorial hospital joins the official approved list after provisional status due to timing. Dr. Franklin H. Martin notes overall U S and Canada hospital care improves despite economic strain, with better death rates and shorter stays. Augusta General and Knox County General also in provisional category.
Mr and Mrs Thomas F Perkins marked their fifty years of marriage with a Monday celebration at their West Bath home. He ran a market garden for decades and with son H Dorman Perkins operates a floral greenhouse. Their wedding at her Hardings home was witnessed by 75 relatives, with Rev E S Stackpole officiating.
The Sagadahoc Superior Court Grand Jury returned five indictments in a six hour session. Elmer Gowell of Bowdoin faces charges of felonious assault and abuse of a 12 year old Sabatus girl. Dana R. McClintic of Harpswell and Brunswick is indicted for manslaughter in the Woolwich automobile death of Alonzo Cromwell. Alexander McDougall Jr. is arraigned on breaking and entering with larceny of a .22 rifle. Other indictments name seven persons in total as cases proceed toward pleas.
Bath citizens and business leaders attended a Boston lunch sponsored by the Federal Housing Administration where officials outlined a nationwide housing program. They predicted a large repair market, job creation, and economic gains, urging local campaigns to expand from Bath starting Wednesday.
