The Bath City Council approved transferring $1,000 from the CWA insurance to ERA funds to build a concrete culvert 18 by 22 feet for Whiskeay creek to alleviate lake overflow and protect the causeway. Estimated material cost is $921.56 with $816 for labor, funded by ERA.
Stanley Shaw, a Woolwich youth, escaped serious injury Sunday evening when his Ford touring car left the Woolwich Wiscasset highway. After a flat rear tire caused his shingles load to shift, the vehicle tipped into a field, rolled onto its top and damaged the top and body. Shaw leaped free before the crash. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Edward B Shaw of Murphy's Corner.
Washington county weighs plans to bid shipment of trees though the state bans lumbering in most counties. Officials note no tree disease in the area and farmers without lumbering projects are already cruising woods and marking young firs for potential removal.
City boards urge immediate purchase after last winter's breakdown left Bath residents cut off. A seven year service tractor with plow capability is estimated at about 5000 dollars with trade in. Some suggest extra trucks, but highway and sewer board prefers a dedicated replacement to meet future blizzards.
Bath horses and riders dominated the Topsham Fair Horseshow taking twelve ribbons across 24 classes including six firsts. Hon Arthur J. Dunton's stable earned three firsts and two thirds, Harp the Gillies bay won two firsts and a second, and Edward Sewall Jr. rode Spot to victory in the children's Best Rider class.
George E. Levya of Turner Court Maine surprised to find a full grown partridge in his yard while emptying an ash pan. He captured the bird unharmed using the pan as a sling and wonders if it will become partridge pie or be sent to President Roosevelt to show what the New Deal has done for Maine hunting.
Early Sunday a series of raids by the county sheriff led to eight arrests on gambling charges and maintaining a gambling place near Chase's Corner. Arraigned Monday before Judge Keegan, one defendant faced a 100 dollar fine plus costs or 60 days in jail. seven others paid 5 dollar fines with costs and had fines suspended. Officers seized chairs, tables, cards, cash, and several alcohol bottles at the scene.
At the annual parish meeting held Monday evening the Central church outlined Centennial week observances for next spring as it reaches its centenary. The Every Family Canvass to fund this year’s expenses is set for Tuesday evening October 16 from seven to nine. Owen J. Ledyard was elected moderator and William W. Robinson clerk. Treas. Miss Martha A. Foote presented her report along with the parish house committee report by Mrs. William H. Small. New officers and committees include Martha A. Foote treasurer, Edmund P. committee, Mrs. Jesse Donnell, Mrs. Fred H. Lord, Edmund P. Briggs on the music committee. Mrs. William H. Small, Mrs. Jesse Donnell, James Ledyard on the parish house committee. Everett Lord chief usher and Andrus Coleman assistant.
Justice George H. Worster will preside over Sagadahoc Superior Court next Tuesday in exchange with Justice George L. Emery. For the first time women will serve on juries Emily Rideout and Bernice Carr named for grand and traverse panels. Grand jurors and traverse jurors are listed with several towns represented. county attorney John P. Carey Jr. to meet the grand jury one final time.
Patten Free Library renewed leadership as William S. Shorey became director for seven years replacing Rupert H. Baxter. Judge Walter S. Glidden was reelected president, Arthur K. Purington secretary, and Charlies C. Low treasurer with Miss Margaret R. Foote and the staff retained. The nine month report shows a net gain of 452 volumes bringing totals to 29,959 in a collection of 34,240 volumes.
Dr Bertram E Packard Maine education commissioner spoke at the Lincoln Sagadahoc Teachers association convention at Morse high school. More than 200 educators from two counties attended the sessions with reports on public school finance and opportunities for children.
Duck hunters faced poor shooting on opening day of the 1934 season at Merrymeeting bay. A high wind churned waters and damaged camouflage floats while tidal near-low water hindered boat handling. Many veterans called it the poorest gunning in a decade as few ducks were taken. other bays reported similar results.
