Maine deer season ends Thursday with solid hunt overall

Maine’s 1944 open deer season, ending at sundown Thursday, is expected to fall short of last year’s 24,408 kill but remain highly satisfactory with estimates around 20,500 to 23,000. Northwestern counties show reduced numbers from last winter, while Washington Han cock and Penobscot counties may modestly improve. Local hunting conditions include good tracking snow and soaking rains, plus an amusing incident of illegal night hunting. Also noted are large bucks and a colorful Ray Trullinger anecdote from a Maine cabin. Coastal waters teem with waterfowl such as redlegs, whistlers and teal for shooters this week.
