A deputy insurance commissioner order dated Nov 24 1944 requires removal or remedial work by Dec 24 1944 on oil tanks at York and Middle streets Bath Maine. The action follows complaints by property abutters that elderly tanks store inflammables and pose fire hazards to nearby buildings and streets including Chestnut Crescent High Middle Pearl and York. The order names Norman O Howard and James A Clappison and cites Section 48 Chapter 35 Revised Statutes Maine 1930. Continued on Page Two.

Fire Fatalities in Bath House Blaze Leave Woman Dead
A fire early Saturday at 220 Oak Street, Bath, killed Miss Helen M. Yarowick and severely injured Miss Lila E. Fisher. Both welder employees at Bath Iron Works were found in the shed entrance to their first floor rear apartment. The blaze gutted the apartment and damaged the main house. Mrs. Hynes and Eliza Woods escaped. Fire started around the kitchen range and spread rapidly. Fisher was moved near the door to outside air before succumbing to burns.

Private First Class William D. Watson of Bath Maine receives the Soldiers Medal for a wartime ambulance rescue near a burning Halifax bomber in England on September 3 1944. Despite shock and burns he fought the fire and aided injured airmen while two medical officers guided the response. The act earned high commendation from Major General William E. Kepner.

Barrett of Bath Maine a tank platoon leader with the Fourth Armored Division in France is cited for meritorious achievement and awarded the Bronze Star Medal for leading a crucial assault at Chateau Salins on 15 September 1944. Barrett husband of Eileen Barrett has a long Army record including enlistment in 1941 and commissions in 1942. He has served overseas since the Normandy breakout aiding the Brittany drive then to Alsace Lorraine.

Youthful Skater Saves a Comrade at Mill Pond
Leroy Edward Clark, son of Mr and Mrs Leroy Clark, saved Leo Henderson from drowning after he broke through ice in 12 feet of water at Mill pond. Henderson went under twice before Leroy carried him to his home. A second boy, Harold Gadding, also plunged but freed himself and sought shelter. Mrs Clark rushed to see if her son had drowned. Miss Mary F Gibbons and Mrs John A Morse plan to travel Thursday to Laguna Beach via Chicago and El Paso.

Destroyer Benner Takes Her Plunge In Driving Rain
The USS Benner the 20th destroyer to slide from Bath Iron Works this year went overboard 22 minutes after launch delayed by extreme tides and winds. Named for the late Second Lieutenant Stanley Graves Benner the ship’s sponsor Mrs. Herman C. Benner Arlington Mass. and relatives attended the Bath ceremony. Lieutenant Benner born July 5 1916 enlisted 1940 commissioned 1942 and was killed at Guadalcanal October 24 1942 earning the Silver Star posthumously for gallantry leading his platoon under heavy enemy fire.

In Phippsburg near Bath a Saturday night blaze destroyed the Pitch Pine hill home of Marjorie Doucette. Hospital League to sponsor new X ray quarters
The Junior Hospital League met with Mrs Linwood Haynes and Mrs Theodore Earl presiding. They reported 43.50 raised from a doll booth at Ye Olde Tyme Faire, to be turned over to the Hospital Auxiliary. The group voted to move X ray equipment to the new wing, a project costing about 2000, financed entirely by the league through drives.
