Eel Grass Vanishing Along New England Coast
The eel grass zostera marina is rapidly thinning along the Atlantic coast from North Carolina to the Maritime Provinces. Scientists from the Boyce Thompson Institute and the Massachusetts Fish and Game Association study possible causes including salinity change, temperature, trawling, and competition from other plants. Observers note disappearing beds from Maine to Cape Cod causing concern for migratory birds and coastal ecosystems.
