Ezra L. Witham, 22, of Bowdeinham, Maine, sought by a reward, was captured in New Hampshire after officers surrounded a house. They surprised him in bed but he grabbed a wrench and attacked for ten minutes before control was established.
The court commits Witham to Auburn jail to await trial at the January term of Saga dahoc Superior Court. Sheriff Henderson and Chief Gardiner fought to arrest Witham in a farm house near Littleton as officers held posts outside and prepared to shoot if he emerged. The sequence began Saturday night May 14 when Witham allegedly attacked Br eath Beech and fled after stealing the car and evading police across Canada and into Vermont and Boston before Montreal tips led to his capture. Beech identifying a photo confirmed Witham as the assailant who nearly killed him.
Miss Emma E. Walker presented Most Worthwhile Books of Fiction for the Year at Winnegance Harbor readings for the Times readers. She urged National Book Week as women shape the nation’s library movement, recalling early community book collections and the shift to public libraries. Federal agents seized a car on the Woolwich Georgetown road containing 50 gallon cans of alleged alcohol. Driver Ernest L. Ashton of Lewiston and companion Lucien Renney of Lewiston were jailed in Bath and to appear before U S Commissioner Gouki in Portland. Investigators from York Augusta and Bath led the operation, linked to a larger liquor running network. The destination appeared to be the coast, prompting officials to question the route and motive as Knights of Pythias events moved to Yarmouth.
Mr and Mrs Samuel F Bates of West Bath celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at a Thanksgiving gathering in a local home Their six children and extended family attended including Delmar Bates Bath Lloyd Bates Albany and William Foster Topsham Also present were relatives from Portland Portland area and Richmond Ohio travel prevented grandmother Margaret Rich from attending.
Mr. and Mrs. George T. Cotton of Richmond observed their fortieth wedding anniversary on Thanksgiving Day at their Dresden Mills home. A large reception ran from two to five in the afternoon as neighbors and friends extended congratulations and gifts.

Miss Ruth Coombs of West Bath said two young men entered her Berry's Mill road residence between 6 30 and seven o'clock on Monday evening one holding a revolver while the other searched for valuables The pair escaped with a few trinkets including a watch chain cameo pin locket and bracelet The men apologized and left after claiming they had entered the wrong house Sheriff Albert Henderson was investigating the robbery which occurred while she rested awaiting a radio program She lives alone on the Berry's Mill road the third house on the left past Perkins Greenhouses
Bailey Evening school opened Monday night with 266 registrations. A teachers meeting outlined the schedule across commercial, elementary, home economics, handicraft, and manual arts courses. The diesel engineering class moves to Monday and Wednesday from Tuesday and Thursday starting December 5.
Members of the cast from Cosmopolitan club and The Thespians attended a social evening at rehearsal rooms Tuesday night. A Thespians business meeting, led by president Charles F. Cummings, discussed plans for the coming year and an upcoming play announcement. The club aims to present three ad mission free entertainments for associate members, followed by cards, dancing, and refreshments.
The Independent's Album recalls how Long Cove road and bridge looked in 1889 with steep grades at both ends and buggy travel. Early cars struggled on the grades and even had to back up to reach gasoline, a contrast to modern motor travel over forty years later.

Fire of mysterious origin enveloped the 40 room Webster House on the New Meadows river in West Bath. By midnight the roof was gone and the second floor a blaze as a northwesterly gale spread embers to an ice house and nearby cottages. Neighbors aided in preventing spread while Clarence Poland rushed to the scene as the interior burned fiercely.
