Family escapes in night clothes as house burns in Woolwich
Five people fled a burning two story home at Murphy's Corner Woolwich around 4 a.m. on Monday. The Wright property, a story and a half house with a barn and henhouse, was destroyed. Mr Paul and family, including Earl 15 and Gordon 13, and John Downey, all from Portland, escaped in night clothes with minimal belongings as fire damaged nearby structures. The blaze, likely from a chimney, prompted quick help from Bath Fire Department, Kennebec bridge toll house, Woolwich Red Cross volunteers, and local officials who organized shelter and aid. The fire left the family homeless, aided by local residents and emergency workers. The Wright residence sits near Barley Neck road, close to Gardiner’s Summer home at Phipps Point.

Mr and Mrs Immer Kronkhite of Richmond died when their grain truck was struck by a Maine Central train at the Kimball street crossing. Kronkhite was decapitated and his wife badly mangled. They were 54. Elden, 16, and other children survive. Signals at the crossing were functioning.
