Woolwich Sets 1959 Tax Rate At 40 Mills Amid Fire Loss
Woolwich selectmen set the 1959 tax levy at 40 mills, three mills lower than last year and two below town officers’ March estimate. A $2,696 reduction in appropriations helps offset rising valuations after new construction and property upgrades. The Carlton barn fire wiped out a $10,000 property, but town leaders still report a net decrease. A special town meeting next Monday will consider signing a fire protection pact with Bath with a 10 percent rate increase but similar terms as the current agreement.
