Phippsburg notices list many season guests and visitors at Sebasco Lodge Sebasco Estates and nearby cottages. Residents from Bath Marblehead Lynn New York City and Boston host or visit relatives with extended summers at Small Point Beach Perry’s Cove and Burnt Coat Island among others. Delayed continuation teased for Page Four.
The regular July Dro more Farm Bureau gathering drew 33 members at the Winneganee Community Club House with new nonresident members welcome. Guests from across New York and Massachusetts attended. The program featured homemaking demonstrations, planning for the Aug 29 supper and fair, and an all day picnic slated for Aug 7 at Five Elms. Committees were named for supper, decorations, aprons, and novelties, and a transport coordinator was appointed for the Aug 7 event. Dinner, served by a dedicated committee, cost 30 cents.
Capt. Jacob W. Haley and Mrs Haley observed their 60th wedding anniversary with a noon family dinner at Southport Inn and an evening gathering at their 248 Washington Street home. The couple, married July 14 1885 at Eureka House, have a son Olison P. Haley and daughter Mrs Chester H. McCabe. Capt Haley served as a marine engineer coast guard lighthouse keeper at Seguin and Berkins Island light before retiring to Bath seven years ago.
A long list of Bath area residents and visitors fill the July schedule at Popham Beach. References include Ellinswood from Providence visiting his grandmother, Miss Kathleen Lewis and Miss Virginia Oliver from Bath, and many others from Bath Portsmouth Worcester and New York with cottages and hotels identified. Church services at Popham are noted with Rev Brown delivering sermons and the Salvation Army leader to lead services next Sunday.
Duncan H Farrell of Whiskeay Lake announces a girls life saving course starting soon. A woman instructor will lead daily sessions for one and a half weeks at 9:30 AM. Several girls have signed up and others are urged to contact Farrell now to learn the start date. A boys class ends this week and lists of juniors and seniors are provided.
The Bath handtub Kennebec, winner of the first muster, will attend the New England muster in Portland on Saturday. Chester Lewis of Engine Three arranged transportation. Bath Fire Department provides gasoline and Bath Highway and Sewer Department furnishes the truck to move the historic vessel.
Norman Merritt McCabe Jr son of Mrs Madelyn McCabe of Freeport visited his aunt and uncle Mr and Mrs Leon Pennell in Winnegance. Carolyn A Oliver training at Webber hospital Biddeford visited her parents at 52 High Street Bath. The Ayles family from Peabody Mass spent days camping in Maine with Mrs Winnifred Merry at 1 High Street Bath. Ralph M Merry Jr celebrated fifth birthday at Camp Nomsiyene Womsikuk Snow's Landing on Winneyanee Lake with gifts and pink decorations. Guests included Virginia Ayles Charles and Ernest Ayles Bath, Jeanette Ruth Atwood Charlotte Patty Brown Millicent Merry and Leon B Pennell Jr. Leon's pony Beauty entertained the group. Vacation school exhibit at Winneganee school held outdoors due to church alterations. handwork shown in vestry and outdoors awards given. Mrs Fred L Parks and son Lincoln arrived from Somerville Mass. son returned home Sunday.
Governor Louis E Brann of Maine and Yale president James Rowland Angell head honorary sponsors for a festival presenting Aristophanes Birds as the first American production titled Greek Of Thee I Sing. The 50 member cast, chorus, Elsa Frame costumes and Lehman Engel music promise a brilliant three performance run at The Building of Arts amphitheatre on July 20 22 and 23 at 3 30 p m.
Miss Lillian Caton, 19, gains notice after returning to Brooklyn from a city visit with her parents and sister. Her photos will accompany musical numbers by Curley Adams, as in contracts used by Rudy Vallee and Ruth Etting. Caton has risen from chorus to solo singing and dancing, performing at Loew's Theatre with Benny Davis and awaiting a Chicago theater booking.
Eva Mae Bickle daughter of Henry and 22 North Street Brunswick married Brice W Roberts son of Walter Roberts of 18 School Street in Central church. Rev David L Wilson officiated. Attendants included Paul A Gregware and sister of the bride. The couple will reside on School Street Brunswick.
Benjamin Bornstein of Auburn married Bertha Arenstam of New York formerly of Bath and Lewiston. The couple exchanged vows Sunday at Avenue N Community Center in Brooklyn. Bornstein, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Bornstein of Auburn, is a Bates College alumnus and State Liquor Commission auditor. Bertha Arenstam is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Arenstam of New York. She graduated from Lewiston High and Columbia University School of Arts. Bornstein starred as quarterback on Bates championship teams in 1929 and 1930.
A Boston Bath front yarn tells how Rover killed four rats with a ferret aid. He swatted three rats himself while a ferret, later revealed as Dan's, was counted as the fifth. Dan demanded payment of 35 dollars, calling the Rover a fool and threatening the sheriff before the Rover paid.
Clifford Elmer Richey of Fairview Massachusetts and Shirley A. Longfellow of Portland and Woolwich were married in Day's Ferry Woolwich with Rev. Charles L. Stevens officiating. The couple will reside in Chicopee after a wedding trip. The ceremony featured a white crepe de chine gown and lillies of the valley bouquet for the bride, and a reception followed at the Corliss home with out of town guests attending.
