Early lens grinding methods shaped crude spectacles
Ancient accounts describe glass discs ground in hollow iron dishes with sand as abrasives. A wooden rod with glass acts as a pestle to form convex lenses, while a woolen cloth with Tripolis powder aided concave shaping, letting visually troubled people test available spectacles.

Recoilless Weapons Boost Western Front Defense Plans
Washington officials say recoilless artillery and shaped charges have sharpened confidence in halting a Soviet western European invasion. Lightweight rifles, 57 and 75 millimeter, and a developing 105 millimeter model enable infantry to oppose tanks at 2,000 to 4,000 yards, boosting morale and firepower.

Fermentation in Honey Must Be Well Ripened for Low Moisture

Yeasts die at 160 degrees F and honey heated to this temperature will not ferment if kept airtight. In dry warm air honey releases moisture, while humid conditions cause moisture absorption.
Oil Industry at 90 Years Growth From Drake to Modern Tech
The oil industry began with Drake's 1859 Aug. 27 well in Titusville, Pennsylvania aimed at kerosene. Rheumatic Fever Linked to Poverty and Social Factors
Dr. Robert Jackson of the University of Iowa argues in the Journal of the American Medical Association that rheumatic fever flourishes in impoverished homes and disrupted families. He notes the disease often causes heart damage and death in children, with about 2 percent of US schoolchildren affected. He emphasizes social factors over economics in propagation and cites society’s aid mechanisms.
