The Bath Junior Legion team won three games over the weekend, beating Manchester post of Westbrook 18 to 6 and sweeping Rumford Junior Legion 4 to 0 and 13 to 0 in a double-header. Pitcher Dick Whittier of Westbrook opened with a three-hitter. Wayne Brown followed with another three-hitter for Bath. The spree marks Bath’s tenth straight victory with multiple players contributing in key at bats and defensive plays.

Bridge center span to be lifted soon at Woolwich Arrowsic
Harris Structural Steel Co announces daytime navigation closure on Sasanoa river from June 30 to July 6 to allow installation of the center suspended span of the Woolwich Arrowsic bridge. The span built on a scow at Bath Iron Works will be moved to Bath then lifted into position on one of the closure days.

Bath antique collectors enjoyed a three day event at Huse School as the first Antique Show of North Center P T A. featured a bridal display, lustreware pitchers, majolica, Bohemian vases, and rare porcelain pieces from Lewiston, Portland, Topsham, Randolph, and Gardiner. Highlights included a silk patchwork quilt, a post lantern, a Jackfield cow, a Parian pitcher, a Dresden set, samplers from 1819, and a 18-piece Sheffield silver fruit set.

Capt Hitchcock to retire after 38 years service
Captain Russell S. Hitchcock United States Navy will retire on August 31 ending a 38 year career. He served as Supervisor of Shipbuilding for Maine based in Bath during most of World War II and oversaw 17 wooden shipyards and Bath Iron Works building destroyers and other craft. He began at Annapolis in 1916, served on the U S S Pennsylvania, and later guided cruiser and carrier design efforts at Puget Sound Navy Yard.

Dedication of Westport Island Bridge Draws Wide officials
A Sunday afternoon dedication of the Westport Island Bridge drew about 500 people including local county state and national figures. The 200000 ton causeway costing 300000 opened with a ribbon cut by Mrs Denny and featured remarks by Lloyd B Morton Senator Edward B Denny Jr and Carl M P Larrabee. The ceremony celebrated ending Westport's 50 year isolation since the 1893 ice destroyed wooden bridge and praised future prosperity linked to renewed access and regional commerce.
