Ezra Witham Pleads Guilty to Assault with Intent
Ezra Witham changed his plea to guilty on charges of assault with intent to kill Irving F. Beach in Bowdoinham on May 14. He received a sentence of not less than seven nor more than fourteen years in the Maine State Prison. The trial was disrupted by juror illness, with one juror excused and another absent, delaying proceedings until the change of plea was announced. Prosecutors described the crime as heinous, depicting a Brunswick garage meeting, a lonely woods assault, robbery, partial burial, and abandonment for dead. Separate civil cases involving Elmer and Joseph Dinsmore against Waverly Heating & Supply Co. were settled out of court.
