Divorce Rates Rise Sharply Since 1890 Across Nation
Metropolitan Life Insurance Co released a long-range survey showing divorces in 1937 were 168 percent higher than in 1890. After a World War II era rise and prosperity in the twenties, divorces spiked again in 1934. The report notes the 1920s rise aligns with prosperity but calls the 1934 surge hard to explain with available data. Some suggest many new divorces were due to non-support and abandonment by poorer couples.
