Lobsters Of Today Much Smaller Than Years Ago
A veteran fisherman from Bailey Island notes lobsters have shrunk over 20 years. He cites average weights of two to three pounds now versus larger “Jumbos” of four to five pounds in the past. He attributes the change to many lobstermen using fast boats and trawls, increasing production but reducing growth, with offshore traps laid on groundlines to cut labor and loss.
