A public tribute to Boy Scout growth in Bath with new troops and YMCA sponsorship notes. It highlights Cub Packs, Girl Scouts, and the value of Scouting for youth, plus local pest control efforts and civic events, including Bath and Portland initiatives.
Maine plans to showcase Vacationland to Florida visitors through a multi city lecture and film series. Harrie Coe, long time Maine publicity figure and rail executive, will lead the effort with wife Mrs. Coe and a collection of motion pictures highlighting Maine as a winter destination.
Les Camarades Musicaux visited Mrs. Louis A. Dole at 887 Middle Street for a recital of piano duets solos and violin pieces. Performers included Miss Margaret J. Melcher Mrs. Carl E. Albee Mrs. Fred K. Sturtevant Mrs. Nathan W. Watson Mrs. Albee pianist and Mrs. Ramsay among others with a final female chorus Goodnight.
Club Garret voted Thursday evening to hold a valentine bridge Feb. 15 with Mrs. A. Duncan Bragg as chair man assisted by Miss Henrietta French Miss Cynthia Lemoine Miss Ruth Robinson Mrs. Robert C. Lambie and Miss Barbara Footer. musical selections were given by Edith E. Mackinnon Margaret Mackinnon Jane W Stevens. Dorothy Parker story read by Mary K. Kenney and Ogden Nash poem read by Jeanette F. Shackford. waffles and coffee served. 35 present including new members Mrs. Robert C. Lambie Miss Annie King and Miss Dorothy E. Anliker.
Loring Hart was elected president of the newly formed Reval club of the pastor's class at Corliss Street Sunday school. George Burgon named secretary and Richard Godfrey treasurer. The group will meet last Tuesday each month and will conduct the evening service on February 11. Also present were Amos King Hilton Libby Alden Thomas Harry Bartlett and Harry McNeil.
Clifton Edward Legard of 15 Maple Grove avenue and Gertrude Mary Grimard of Skowhegan were married January 25 at St Marys Catholic church by Rev David P Surette. Attendants were George L Fitzgerald and Rita Sullivan. A second item notes a Waterville resident planned to send a pistol to Finland but a state official confirmed guns cannot be sent there.
Proceeds totaling about 170 were raised at a Nightingale club tea held Wednesday from four to six at Hotel Sedgwick for Memorial hospital. Co chairs were Mrs Ralph O Dale and Mrs James B Lemont, with hostesses and a long list of assisting ladies providing music by Mrs Carleton W Andrews and John H Grindell. Pastel table decor featured yellow accents and floral displays.
Walter James of Richmond, foreman at Freeport shoe shop, pleaded not guilty to operating a motor vehicle under the influence. Arraigned before Judge Gardiner R. Deering, the case was continued to 10 am Saturday Feb 3 after a two hour hearing as the defense presented limited evidence. James was arrested in Bowdoinham Jan 19 by State Highway Patrolman Herbert Marriner.
At the YMCA Hi Youth Club gathering on Monday evening, 35 members participated as new members underwent staged stunts including singing and demonstrations on flying planes and muscle development. The session featured a social with refreshments, plans for the Feb. 5 meeting, and a Camden Snow Bowl conclave on Feb. 9 and 10 with expected attendee count.
The Men's Forum of Nequasset sponsors a business and professional meeting on Thursday February 15 at the Nequasset Congregational Church. Supper at 6 30 by Ladies Auxiliary. Speakers include Fred Nutter federal representative Maine Dept of Agriculture and A W Manchester director of the AAA Northeast Division. Moving pictures will be shown. The purpose is to inform local men about federal conservation work in agriculture and industry. Invitations go to nearby men's clubs urging attendance.
Bangor banking affiliates will be prominent at the 1940 Junior Officers Forum of the Savings Banks Association of Maine to be held at the Eastland hotel in Portland on February 13 and 14. Frank H. Floyd of Penobscot Savings Bank will chair the first day session morning program. Harold L. Nason of Bangor Savings Bank will chair the second day session and Prof. John H. Magee of Bangor will speak at 10 30 a.m.
Edward Hamblett elected president of the Shipbuilders Amateur Radio Association at its third meeting in Center street club rooms. Lawrence Dupont named vice president, Ernest Robichaud secretary, Joseph St. Pierre treasurer. Members discussed licensing, Morse code instruction, and future amateur radio plans. Meetings set for Tuesdays at 7 30 p m at 35 Center Street.
The January month proved unusually pleasant yet cold with only a few above freezing days. Snow measured about nine to ten inches across the month, and temperatures hovered near or below zero on many mornings. The warmest day came Jan 15 at 34, while last January saw 40 in the morning on the 10th.
Charles F. Cummings president of Cummings Motors Inc purchased the Barker property at 740 Washington Street from Mrs Mildred Barker Wright and Bath Trust Co trustees. The two story ten room home sits on grounds south and west of the residence with no definite plans for use announced. Also reported a house fire in Litchfield Road area caused 1590 damage to the Van Harris home. A new baby arrived January 22 for Mr and Mrs Sedley H Berry of Merrymeeting Farm Bowdoinham.
A Sagadahoc county Republican gathering in Davenport Memorial hall drew strong attendance despite poor weather. Mrs. Inez Wing of the state committee spoke on naturalized citizens and party work, praising local committees and noting ritual roles for chairmen secretaries and treasurers. Her tour continues to finish before county caucuses, with March roster deadlines and a tribute to Jane Murphy for campaign efforts.
The Board of Registration of Voters will hold a six day session from February 21 to register voters for the March 4 municipal election. It will be closed on February 22 for Washington’s Birthday and February 25 on Sunday, with sessions ending February 28. To qualify, applicants must have resided in the state six months, the last three in Bath, and foreign-born voters must show naturalization papers. The board will also enroll party preferences for voters never previously registered, and the deadline to change party enrollment for the June 17 Primary has passed.
Cosmopolitan Music-Drama department votes to move the Feb 14 gathering to Feb 21 with the Junior club as guests. Members may bring guests. a program and refreshments are planned under the guidance of several members. Potential readings by Mrs. David Graham are discussed for April.
The Women’s Christian Temperance Union met at 31 Deering Street to map a 1940 drive for 700 new members. Mrs. Nelllie M Brown hosted. scripture read by Mrs Theresa Hill. poems read by Mrs Maude Russell. current events from the Union Signal covered liquor topics. Mrs Lillian Mayo named chair of the February 13 social meeting.
Ferdinand W. Coombs of Bath sustained facial bruises after his taxi, owned by Ralph E. LeGard, collided with a Rockland oil truck on the Bath Wiscasset highway about three miles west of Wiscasset. The incident occurred as Coombs was returning from a fare to Wiscasset. Also, 12 year old Hugh Hastings shot a white porcupine while hunting near Fryeburg, then mounted and gave it to his sister Helen, a Westbrook Junior College student.
Bath Maine native Major William R. Kimball expressed deep gratitude for Southern hospitality shown to his Battery D unit in Savannah during the Spanish American War. The letter notes 25 Hyde Light Guards members in his regiment and recalls local figures, including City Clerk John W. Gilmore.
The Winter Street Men's club screened three Maine Development Commission reels and two self films showing Maine coast lakes a canoe trip below Lake Cobbosseecontee and a St John River trip. Wildlife shots enhanced the event a pot roast supper followed. The club set Feb 8 for the next meeting with Justin Wayne as magician and named a supper and program committee. Treasurer's report showed a satisfactory treasury with donations to the Children's Christmas tree and carpet fund.
Lendall Greene of Sebasco near Phippsburg pleaded guilty in municipal court to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Judge Gardiner R. Deering ordered a $100 fine plus $5.30 costs or 60 days in Kennebec County Jail. Greene, a fisherman, was arrested on Water Street Thursday night by Patrolman John J. Foley.
Wesley P. Judkins son of Mr and Mrs Wallace Judkins of Oakland recently moved from a research and teaching post in the College of Agriculture at the University of Ohio to the University of Connecticut at Storrs. He works mainly in horticultural research with duties in instruction and the extension service of the Connecticut agricultural college.
The Central church Men's Club held its banner meeting at the parish house with a beef stew supper and guest Ford Motor Co officials presenting a film tour of River Rouge plant and four Western National Parks. President Stanley Wallace led a brief meeting. reports by Noyes showed record membership and healthy finances. Next meeting Feb 8 at Winter Street church with guests from that club.
Mrs. William B. Campbell delivered two more barrels of clothing from Bath area residents to the Finnish Consulate on Friday. The John J. Desmond Co. donated a large box of men s clothing filling nearly a barrel. They include coats overshoes shoes dresses underwear mittens sweaters jackets as Finland endures severe cold and clothing shortage. Residents are asked to contact Mrs Campbell by telephone for further contributions.
One of 35 applicants for a motor vehicle operator license failed the test conducted by State Police in Bath. The candidate faltered on questions before driving. The driving test covered about one mile with a trooper, including hill stops and railroad crossing warnings. Sergt. William Gibson of Calais and Patrolman John P. Crosby supervised the exams.
