Bath and surrounding towns report heavy weekend presence at Popham Beach with cottage guests from Cambridge and Montclair visiting Shore Acres and South Shore cottages. Residents discuss rentals for September, local shopping, and social events including dances at Society Hall and a two act play with a concluding dance.
Mrs Anna M Sharpe of Brooklyn arrives at Popham Beach for an extended stay with her brother Edward McNulty. The Hydes of Yarmouth plan a Canada trip after cottage visits on Bath road. Essex CT resident Mrs J Randall Gleason books Webber cottage for early September, arriving Aug 31. Portland couple Mr and Mrs William H Ohler visit their daughter Mrs Albert Willard Smith on Sunday. Norman Rand of Portsmouth visits family at the Hennessy cottage for the weekend. Bath residents Mr and Mrs William W Robinson join a Beach cottage gathering by their daughter Mrs Hill.
SEBASCO HILL residents occupy their Summer homes on the hill as owners. Rev C Bevan and family of New York enjoy cool sea breezes at Seaview with Ruth Wheeler of Troy as guest. Capt Henry W Butler and Mrs Butler of Bath return after visits at Anchorage. F Raymond Richardson and family of Dorchester stay for weeks. Merritt Shea son of Maurice and Mrs Shea of Arrowsic returns from Bath hospital after tonsil and adenoid operation Friday.
Phippsburg set a special town meeting for Aug 24 at 10 a.m to decide acceptance of the Sebasco Mosquito Abatement District charter. Overseers Cushman Brazier and Merritt call voters who reside or own property south of Parker Head to determine eligibility. If rejected, the charter can be reconsidered within five years.
Joseph Charles Footer Jr and Irene F. Coombs were married in St. Mary's rectory with a single ring ceremony at 11:30. The couple, both with Bath ties, were attended by the groom's brother J Emery Foster and wife. They plan a motor trip in Canada.
The wedding of Miss Helen Safford and Fletcher Harford occurred Saturday at the bride’s home 52 Spring street with a small gathering. Rev Charles H Berry conducted the double ring ceremony. The bride wore powder blue net and silver shoes. matron of honor was Mrs Harold Safford. best man was Harold Safford. The couple left for a two week motor trip.
The funeral for Mrs. Lillian S. Hunter widow of Francis H. Hunter took place Sunday at 2 PM at the Arthur Mayo funeral residence 819 High Street. Rev Weston P. Holman of Beacon Street Methodist Church officiated. Pallbearers were Clifford Molson Arthur Carl and Emery Rideout. Burial followed in Varney Cemetery Brunswick.
The funeral of Mrs Ida Pierce widow of Daniel Pierce of Monmouth was Sunday at 11 in Wesley Methodist Church where she long served as an ardent worker. Rev F B Hittlefield officiated. Bearers were Fred Armes Walter Day Charles Shepard and Ellery E Whittemore. Burial followed in Monmouth. Fred H Witham returned Sunday from a week with Mrs J D Stephenson and family in Gardiner.
Rain gave way to sunshine as Parker's Head picnic at Popham Beach attracted 200 plus attendees. Clam chowder by Lay reyette Oliver fed the crowd from two boilers while families, old friends, and visiting guests gathered under sand dunes for games, songs, and a rallying sense of community.
Storm turns Winnegance Creek into a feeding ground with thousands of black ducks along marshes. Local gravel work advances on the State aid road from Noyes hill toward West Bath, while community clubs plan fall events and Grange hall hosts weekly gatherings. Notables include Mr and Mrs John Raab visiting from New Jersey and Captain Charles Hewitt staying at a Sa baryne camp with family.
Dromore Grange in Phippsburg will host a whist session at the hall this Thursday at eight o'clock. Sandwiches cake and coffee will follow the play. The organizing committee includes Mrs Edna Lyons of Brunswick Mrs Fred Sawyer of Phippsburg and Mrs Harold Hammond of Brunswick Charles Foster of Little Neck Long Island arrived Sunday to visit with his wife and son Harold who stayed with Mrs Foster's sister and husband Mr and Mrs Leland Plummer and in Damariscotta with Mr Foster's father.
Frederick Hart and Howard Mayo died Tuesday at Squirrel Island. George Foss of New York City visited recently with Mrs. Foss. Leslie Hutchinson of Lynn Mass spends summers in Winthrop and visited Bath. Angus E Burden and family hosted Earle MacKensie and his sons Robert and James in their Highland Street home. Bertha Foss of Portland guests Miss Frances Lee Lord daughter of Lieut John A Lord. Frances Lee Lord and Bertha Foss are former Rhode Island School for the Deaf teachers. R Malcolm Doble and Miriam returned to Green Street after a Boston weekend and a Norton trip to Wheaton College campus where Miss Doble was accepted.
A 16-year-old Wakefield schoolboy, David T. Dellanger, scored 31 for nine holes at Shore Acres Sebasco, beating all amateurs to set a new Sebasco course record. Dellanger’s round included six threes and four pars with partners Wilfred Chaney Wesley Marco and Mark Beebe.
T W Hyde camp near S of U V held a Saturday gathering with Sons of Union Veterans and Auxiliary officers present. Notables included Dr Buck department commander, Past Commander Small, Mrs Small, and the Vater couple from Fairfield. Col Philabrook received $100 for National En Campment expenses. Dancing closed the evening after a supper and programs. Mary Ellen and John Newell visited relatives at New Harbor summer home of Charles Moulton.
A committee staged a Friday night benefit at Sebenoa Hall drawing 250 attendees including about 100 youths from Boothbay and Merrymeeting camps. The event cleared around 75 for the Woolwich Union for Christian Service, with performances by local artists and visitors, plus social notes about residents and guests in the area.
