Record tuna boom fuels New England sport fishing surge

New England reports a strong tuna season with over 400 fish landed in a week at Boston markets. 50 of the catch weighed 300–600 pounds, 100 between 95–110, and 250 from 50–75 pounds. The rise of sport fishing spawns a new “fisherman” who collects catches for markets in Bar Harbor, Portland, Ogunquit, and other ports. Boat costs, tackle prices, and tuna club rules from Catalina Island influence New England practices as clubs form and fishing guides proliferate.
