Maine Coast Moss Industry Grows Postwar Hope
Approximately 1,250,000 pounds of sea moss have been gathered from Caseco Bay shores since April 1. El roy Johnson of Bailey Island told Maine Development Commission officials that Maine can supply most or all moss used in the United States and that industry expansion could create coastal jobs after the war. He notes that dried moss serves as a suspension agent in foods and is used in manufacturing, with new uses continually being developed. Johnson predicts Maine will retain the industry with improved processing despite higher wartime costs.
