The Cosmopolitan Club celebrated its thirtieth anniversary with a decorated banquet hall, floral displays, and a program honoring past presidents and members. Speakers recalled club history since 1913 as Governor Sumner Sewall and Mrs. Folsom offered remarks amid a blackout light.

Summer day camp opens for Girl Scouts at Pine Haven
Pine Haven in Sewall woods near Whiskeay welcomed 64 members on opening day with Mrs. Horace A. Bailey of Reading Mass. as director and Mrs. Linwood Carr as assistant. The camp features three units led by Mrs. Voorhees, Mrs. Carpenter, and Mrs. McFadden with numerous Brownies and Juniors. Activities include music nature crafts drama sketching folk dances and cooking. A bicycle tramp is noted and work on patriotic posters and belt making proceeds with daily rest and relay races. Bath residents are urged to volunteer at the Canning Center located in Morse High Domestic Science Room. Twenty five women canned vegetables and berries last week and more helpers are needed daily from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Lightning Fire Destroys Fuller Barn in Albion
A barn owned by Seth Fuller of Albion was struck by lightning Sunday night and burned to ruins, damaging about forty tons of hay farming tools and a milk tank. The house was saved.

Seventeen Bath youths depart for Army and Navy service
Seventeen boys from Bath leave Thursday morning for Camp Devens to begin U S Army duty, with twelve more from the local Selective Service Board bound for Navy service or awaiting departure. The group includes Francis W. Stover Inglewood California, Clarence G. Atwood Bath, and many others from Bath and nearby towns. Rev Timothy C. Maney spoke to the group at the office before departure as U S O and Red Cross volunteers gathered at the station with friends and relatives.

Miss Frances Robie Receives Auto for Phippsburg Work
At Sunday noon following services at the Phippsburg Congregational church Miss Frances Robie was presented with an automobile in appreciation of three years of work guiding religious education for adults and youth. The gift, funded by a foundation with cooperation from Mrs. Georgia Leach, was presented by Rev. Raymond G. Putnam on the church lawn on behalf of the church and the committee for Christian Service.

Scrap Metal Re melts Into Steel Mills From Bath Yard
Bath Iron Works yard and Nathan Petlock Inc process scrap metal for steel mills. About 600 tons monthly are shipped, graded No 1 and No 2, with No 1 pieces under one foot square and No 2 including larger sizes. Last year 5500 tons shipped. more than 6000 expected this year, mostly to mills in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Barn Fire Destroys North End Structure Saturday Night
Firefighters battled a major blaze at a barn owned by Walter I Ken Nelson on Brttee Street Saturday night. The fully destroyed barn caused estimated damage of 400 to 500 dollars with some contents lost and a nearby residence at risk. Fire Chief Richard Frates said the cause appeared arson, though a final determination was pending. Leroy Lord Wire helped alert crews and helped remove a person from the building as flames spread to nearby property. Firefighters used extensive hose lays and booster lines to prevent spread to the Kenerson home and other structures.

Rationing Panel to Open at Bath Iron Works
The Bath Iron Works Plant Area Panel of the War Price and Rationing Board will begin operations Monday August 2. It will handle rationing of gasoline and tires for commuting to the plant and for special cases such as work shoes and home needs.
