New Funds Needed to Meet State School Expenditures
Commissioner Harland A. Ladd told Bath Lions Club that unless new funds arrive, state subsidies to towns for teaching positions and other school costs must be cut to fit the balanced budget. He cited reductions of 93 cents and 89 cents per teaching position across two years, plus 5 percent on tuition reimbursements and 10 percent on conveyance. He noted Maine's constitutional obligation for local school support and the ongoing teacher shortage with an estimated 1,600 new teachers needed next fall. He urged continued state aid for salaries, construction, and equalization as bills are debated in the legislature.
