Liberty Loan Campaign Opens in Basin with Rally and Talks

The Basin Liberty Loan committee led by P. W. Metz and Thos M Hyde organized a kickoff meeting at the Rex theatre. Roy J. Covert urged financial backing for the second Liberty Loan while Judge Metz recalled Basin’s growth and urged local subscriptions, noting Midwest Refining Co. and Great Western Sugar Co. pledges of 40 000 and 20 000 respectively.

Excellent Time at Hyattville Benefit Dance

Dr. L G Van Slyke heads a committee in Hyattville to raise funds for the Soldiers Library fund with a dollar chance and a late midnight lunch. The event on Saturday night October 27 features a music and speeches program, free music by the hosts, and proceeds for the Red Cross and library fund. County Plans Week of Liberty Loan Meetings Across Towns

County committee schedules public Liberty Loan talks from Oct. 19 to Oct. 27 in Otto Burlington Liberty, Manderson Byron Cowley Lovell Greybull Hyattville Bonanza and other spots. Speakers include Dr. Croft Prof Heber Snell Hon Frank W Mondell and local figures to inform on war conditions and fund raising for bonds.

Germany Seizes Russian Island in Baltic Fight

German forces have captured most of the Russian island of Oesel at the head of the Gulf of Finland, with battle reports noting Russian torpedo boat sinks and German gains on Serel batteries. The broader front shows Allied trenches in Flanders and renewed French–German clashes along the Aisne, Isonzo, and Adriatic fronts as artillery duels continue and anticipated larger battles loom.

Basin to Advertise Bids for New Post Office

The Basin postmaster reports bids will open November 22 for a new post office. Plans and specifications are available from the Basin postmaster or the treasury supervising architect in Washington. Construction likely start by spring, improving current inadequate facilities and adding to Basin’s public buildings.

Returns From East Highlight Basin Business Trip

E F Peterson and wife and baby returned to Basin last Sunday from Wibaux Montana where they visited friends. Peterson also traveled to Minneapolis and St Paul on a buying trip for three stores with W S Pease. He notes cold weather and a strained market with lines exhausted and woolen goods hard to secure amid strong demand.

Worland Social Guests Visit Basin Friends

Clyde Warner, Miss Ethel Howell, Mrs. Geo Groshart, and Mrs C L Hall drove from Worland to Basin last Sunday afternoon to visit Mr and Mrs Silver of South Fifth Street. They enjoyed supper there before returning home.

Davenport Woman Returns Home After West Visit

Mrs. BK. L. Davenport has left Creaco, Iowa, after visiting her sister Mrs. A. W. Coons in this area for about ten days. She found the western climate pleasant and appealing during her first trip west.

Slacker Arrest Leads to Postponed Registration at Basin

Deputy Sheriff Albert Fisher brought a young man named John Shoulton to Basin after arrest on a slacker charge. He claimed alien status and ignorance of requirements but agreed to register after Sheriff Wickwire explained the law. The man, a Holland subject, said to be thirty, was released after signing the forms.

Thanksgiving Boxes Aid Rules and Local Drive

Mothers and others are invited to help assemble boxes for Red Cross relief. Express willingness by visiting Red Cross headquarters at the library or writing. No boy from Big Horn County should be without a box. a committee will be at the library Saturday at 9:30 p.m.

The grand lodge gathers in Cheyenne with next year slated for Basin as host. F T Brigham elected Grand Master and G J Schenk as Grand Patriarch. D L Carr re elected Grand Treasurer. Mrs Rhodes named Rebekah Assembly President and received the Decoration of Chivalry. Representatives from Basin and Wyoming towns expected.

Dr Mark H Smith To Attend Clinic In East

Dr Mark H Smith left Wednesday for the east to attend a clinic there next week. He plans to return via Omaha and Council Bluffs to visit his mother and expect to reach home about November 2.
