California Grapes Could Flood East Market Says Dermer
Fresno merchant Henry Dermer, in New York for a buying trip, argues that by underselling East retailers, California grape growers could sell their entire crop for juice. He contends that if San Joaquin Valley grapes reach consumers at 12 1/2 cents a pound, demand would outstrip supply and farmers would not meet it.

Matinees Seen as Wrong Innovation in 1863 London
Matinees began at Astley's in London during the 1863 season as morning performances. Critics attacked daylight shows, with John Oxenford calling them penny-gale fare, yet they grew popular. Astley's was later bought by Dion Boucicault after leaving the Winter Garden. He pioneered more comfortable theatres in shabby, ill-ventilated era venues.
