Barstow Chamber of Commerce tapped H L Miller to speak for Barstow at the Good Roads Convention in Albuquerque on October 6. The report details U S 66 as the Main Street of America, its route from Chicago to Los Angeles, its length of 2449 miles, and pledges by states to pave the road within years. Delegates from California including Barstow frame the project. Crain of the desert district becomes California vice president. Plans include Grand Canyon to Williams paving, a St Louis to Tulsa air route, and a Los Angeles to New York foot race proposed for March 3, 1928.

Graham. The splints were removed last Sunday. Mrs. C. E. Green underwent a minor eye operation in San Bernardino Wednesday and is recovering well. Mrs. Floyd Marvin hosted Wednesday night at the Antler club.

California Taxpayers Cite Rising State Interest Costs

Los Angeles report from October 19 notes figures from the California Taxpayers association based on the Financial Statistics of States showing 1926 costs for state government operations and maintenance up 175.8 percent since 1915. Interest payments rose from 50,446,600 in 1923 to 76,869,095 in 1926, with per capita interest up from 19 cents to 66 cents and per capita bonded debt rising from 5.41 to 16.04 dollars.

Santa Fe Operates Largest Reclaiming Plant in U S

The Santa Fe Railway runs the nation’s largest reclaiming and restoration plant at Corwith near Chicago, covering fifteen acres with two rolling mills that restore material for reuse, saving the company over 1.5 million dollars annually. The Santa Fe also operates a San Bernardino shop reclaiming light and scrap rails, saving 79 201 dollars, and reconditioning heavy rails totaling 1993 tons.

San Bernardino County ranked second in volume of recording among fourteen southern and central California counties.
