A son recalls his father urging him to move the hard coal stove and the memories of childhood chores. He remembers the silent struggle, the stern but loving discipline, and the father confiding his troubles to the wall, yearning to answer his call again.
Barstow Kiwanis Club elected officers for 1928 at a Thursday night meeting with 28 members present. Delegates were chosen for the Kiwanis Convention in Hollywood, with retiring president Rose Whitney and others attending. The new officers include Robert R. Burke as president, George Henderson as vice president, Albert Weld treasurer, Leon Whitney district trustee, and directors Harvey Mosier R L White Lubin Henderson Ed Seymour Even Evensen Arthur Doran and George Siemon.
The Redlands institution enrolls students from five foreign countries and eighteen states, with thirty-two scholars traveling over a thousand miles. The largest out of state group is the Arizona Club with eighteen members, Washington eight, and New Mexico four. About 34 percent come from within twenty miles, 49.8 percent within fifty, 69.6 percent within 1060 miles, 91.0 percent within five hundred miles, and 6.5 percent from beyond a thousand miles. Freshmen average 316 miles from home, totaling 55,840 miles. Fourteen coeds have traveled over a thousand miles to attend Redlands. Among Barstow students are Clinton McKinnon and Jack Wetenhall.
The Railway Commission schedules a public hearing in Barstow on Thursday November 17 at 9. The session aims to examine safety and necessity of Santa Fe grade crossings with input from Santa Fe officials Barstow supervisors State Highway Engineer Morton Auto Club of Southern California Barstow Chamber of Commerce and others.
Los Angeles predictions say USC will meet Notre Dame in Chicago on November 26 to decide the east west title. Howard Jones' 1-0 favored squad topped California 18 to 0, then faces Colorado and Washington State before the Notre Dame game. The Trojans, unbeaten so far, aim to remain undefeated and improve on last season.

Crawford and Mrs. Martin Isurtz and child. Mrs. Virginia Johnson of Prescott Arizona visits Dr. and Mrs. Benson and family. Ads note Atwater-Kent radio deals and large ad buys prompting price drops. Mrs. Fred Lobaugh hosts sister Anna Burnsides of Youngstown Ohio. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bossard visit Los Angeles to arrange a near finished cement block home on First Street.
Santa Fe fireman Harvey Wiley was accidentally shot and killed last week in Needles. He leaves a wife and three children including a baby under a month old and four year old twins.
Mr and Mrs Thompson have returned from Oklahoma and taken residence in the Buckman apartment on Hutchison street.
Mrs J D Prosser, a Yermo and Barstow visitor, travels from Los Angeles to Canada for a nine month tour. Mrs Tresser, formerly of Yermo now living in Savana Georgia, plans to be away from home for nine months after visiting Los Angeles and friends in Yermo.
Mr and Mrs P J Jordan visited Los Angeles at the start of the week. Mrs Jordan’s sister resides in the city.
Id. Burke of the Tourist Garage shows new Studebaker and Erskine models while poultry market reps tour the district seeking the holiday trade. Prices are expected to match last year. A Warner Poultry Company representative from Pasadena visited the Skobel Haiment ranch, which hosts 500 to 600 turkeys and could yield about $3500 in income.
Mrs R L Veague is visiting in Richmond this week with Mr and Mrs Wa Allen.
The twenty-Seventh Annual San Bernardino County C E Union Convention will be held November 11 to 13 at the Community Church of Fontana. Speakers include S Mae Lennon Rev H Stivers Otis D Stromenger and others from Los Angeles San Bernardino Corona Redlands and Fontana. The event features music, banquets, Bible study, rallies for Juniors to Young People, a Bawl game sightseeing trip and a Sunday broadcast party.
Division 8 engineer EF Sullivan and first assistant C B Witching toured Barstow after travels from Needles and other highways. They praised maintenance foremen and the rain response, noting rapid grading and dragging to smooth dirt roads in Mojave Desert. Sullivan cited oil surfaced highways Daggett to Victorville and valued costs under 1500 dollars per mile.
United States remains the top producer and consumer of mineral products in 1926. Utah Copper Company’s vice president L B Cates notes per person consumption at 15 pounds copper 15 pounds lead and 10 pounds zinc. He calls for expanding home markets exporting surplus minerals and fair taxation at state and national levels.
Signal Maintainer Scott has purchased a new sport Oakland roadster for personal use. The purchase reflects a stylish upgrade and adds a eye catching vehicle to the department staff's car lineup.
Miss Dorothy Dean of Buffalo New York was injured when a Ford roadster driven by two men ran over her as she exited to fix a headlight near Amboy. She suffered scalp wounds and body bruises. Dr John Graham was called to treat her. Motoring passersby took her to town for care. the car did not stop.
Mrs Cecile Reed returns from Los Angeles while C Hansen of Vista visits Richard Dansen and Louise Osborn. Roscoe Tippinecott and kids stay at J W Burden home. Sischo party and Lester McCoy travel to LA. Women’s Club bids farewell to Rue H Baxter bound for Hawai I sans date. Hal loween party for schoolchildren hosted by Idella M Stockton. Ethel Clinkenbeard returns from LA.
Prominent visitors including Congressman John G. Alien and A. K. Kellogg toured Barstow and the Boulder Dam site, rode the Colorado River to the Black Canyon, and attended a Las Vegas Chamber banquet praising dam efforts. The pair planned Imperial Valley inspections before heading on, highlighting California’s irrigation interests and state rights in the federal project.
New residents arrive in Hinkley valley including Mr and Mrs M A Jones and baby and Mr and Mrs Pinery with two children on the J A Clark homestead. Sleeper family prepares 40 acres for alfalfa, Edwards returns from Los Angeles fire duties, Ray Kelly takes over Hinkley Garage mechanical department, Seymour family visit San Bernardino, and Los Angeles buyers purchase a large tract in the Harper Lake district.
A. J. Weld, manager of the Barstow Branch of the San Bernardino Valley Bank, announces the bank will be closed all day November 11 in Barstow on account of Armistice Day.
Two bargain business lots are for sale on the highway at Barstow. Properties are advertised as increasing in value and a good investment. Henderson and Nicklin, Barstow, California, are handling the sale.
