An engineer proposes flood management for the Mojave River through a series of low concrete dams that back flood waters to raise underground water tables and fill adjacent irrigation basins. The plan would require site selection, borings, and soundings to test practicability and bed rock conditions for impounding and controlled overflow.
A historical summary covers Southern Sierras Power Co. gains from Barstow to Hinkley valley with promised eight cent gas engine equivalence, the economics of electricity versus distillate engines, and a traveler’s note on iron oxide magnetite ore deposits in Utah and Mojave desert formations. It also cites Joaquin Miller verses found in an Arizona prospector’s cabin.
The text discusses theories on the origin of high ferro-magnesian deposits near the Pacific coast, debating whether iron formed via hydrothermal alteration of lime and magnesian carbonates with magnetite replacement or direct iron intrusion along contact zones. It notes prospecting interest, ore surface oxidation patterns, and the need to locate and assess ore quality for potential manufacturing use. The passage also intersperses poetry reflecting on war, nature, and mortality.
Perishable fruits shipped eastbound through Colton exceed cooling car supply with daily shipments of grapes and tomatoes. A heavy flow of feeder cattle from northern Arizona Utah and Idaho passes Colton en route to the Imperial Valley where they will be fed for the winter. Cattle are unloaded in Colton yards and fed there.
A sharp exchange features a taunt about parental marriage, with the boy's crude claim met by a reply that implies a war secretary as the officiant. The volley highlights a snappy domestic clash and a quick, witty dismissal.
A probationary switchman asks the editor to drop his name from weekly news as he stops his subscription to the local paper. The request underscores a desire for anonymity amid community reporting.
Progressive residents of Barstow claim the district shows political bias by featuring supporters on the printers subscription list. The item asks readers if their name appears, implying scrutiny of who is included and urging verification.
Barstow seeks workers like T. J. Anderson to develop regional ore resources. Mr. Anderson plans a smelter, decision pending on location in Barstow. Rail access from all directions makes Barstow a logical site for processing thousands of tons of desert ore, much of it low grade but potentially profitable locally.
