The Barstow Union High School hall was broken into on Monday night with about ten doors damaged and locks forced. Money tools and two garments from sewing rooms were stolen while mail order tools were left behind. Miss Paxton reported the robbery promptly. Authorities note eight or nine burglaries in the past two months, averaging almost one per week, urging decisive action.
Miss Caroline S Waters and others visited the high school while Mr Farrington returned from Los Angeles after his wife illness. Mrs Farrington underwent surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital and is recovering well. Olga Rizzardini rejoined classes after her mother’s illness in San Bernardino. Enrollment nears one hundred as Margaret Shuckhart enrolls. November 12 and 13 mark quarterly exams completing a quarter of the year. The Student Body reorganizes to meet the year's work and plans plays an operetta and the annual. Barbara Higgens visited Vera Thomas. The high school building was broken into Monday night with lockers opened and minor losses reported. George Crain’s birthday party followed by bridge and refreshments. The PTA plans the next meeting at the high school evening.
M S Slaughter traveling superintendent for Southern Sierras Power Co visited Barstow district manager and Printer force. Bob Krehbiel of Deedly and Cutler called at the Printer office en route to Trenton Missouri to join L Struhar in a new venture and chicken hatchery with 47 000 egg capacity. Toehead Fisher’s orchestra plays November 12 at the Auditorium with a turkey giveaway and lively music.
Progress continues on a mill northeast of Barstow near a large red water tank. A 200 ton capacity standard ball mill has arrived along with an 80 hp diesel engine for pumping water. A carload of mining supplies from Amboy has arrived. Superintendent J W Harris says the mill will be ready soon. The Simpson Flotation process will treat ore from the old Lord mountain property tested by Simpson Engineering. Principal owner J T Anderson has run numerous tests and believes the method may be right.
Charley Kinsey opened a new Waffle House in the Henderson Building on First Street. A patronage far exceeds expectations, credited to an attractive Printer ad. The eatery features counter booths and electric plates for short orders and electric waffle irons.
Contractor E. 32. Kinslow plans a class A steel service station on the corner beside the City Meat Market for Mr and Mrs E L Pitcher. Grounds will be fenced with lawn flowers and shrubs. Station will handle Shell and Standard products and aims for modern, attractive presentation.
The Christian Endeavor group led by Wil lard Wiright will present a circus themed program at 7:30 with the topic International Friendship and biblical texts. Clin ton McKinnon hosts a Four Wall Circus this Saturday at 7:30 featuring side shows a main show games and refreshments. A silver offering and one cent admission apply. All ages invited at the auditorium.
W R White who served as Barstow agent transferred duties to Bakersfield on November 1. New Santa Fe agent Mr Whitlow plans to move his family from Needles once a residence is located by Dr Pratt. Dr Pratt and his wife have occupied the agents house for the past year.
Barstow's new Main Street paving of one third width was delayed three weeks after the Board of Supervisors received only one bid from A W Gardner of Redlands. His bid stood at 5500, about 500 above the engineer's estimate for the 15 foot 10 inch by 1450 foot section. The California State Highway Commission and Santa Fe Railway agreed to pave two thirds of the street, linking the National Old Trails highway and the business district, under a gentlemen's agreement approved by the supervisors.
The Parent Teachers Association advertises an Armistice Day dance for next Wednesday in the local Auditorium with good music and floor managers ensuring a pleasant evening for attendees.
William E. Young, previously secretary to Santa Fe officials and now secretary and assistant to A. G. Kendall, the county purchasing agent, fills the post after Paul White's resignation. Young, once with H.S. Wall and later Armstrong, has worked in a Los Angeles firm’s purchasing department and is noted as an efficient stenographer.
Walker Jones of Victorville contributed an article praising the National Old Trails Highway. The National Auto Club Weekly reprinted the piece in the current bulletin sent to hundreds of newspapers for coast to coast publicity of the highway.
Elks plan a Home Night on November 10 at the San Bernardino clubhouse with initiation of eight neophytes at 5 pm, a 6 30 pm turkey dinner, and entertainment including dance and monologues. More than 700 Elks expected, with desert district attendees for the annual meeting. C H A Palmer chairs the entertainment committee.
Mrs J E Willis travels east to visit a sister she has not seen in more than twenty years. She plans to visit Topeka St Louis and other cities during her trip.
California Division of Water Rights approves Mojave River Irrigation District to divert 30 000 acre feet per year from Deep Creek and West Fork of Mojave River though landowners contest the move. Notice records that diversion must respect existing vested rights and could prompt legal action in San Bernardino County Superior Court. A meeting of Mojave River Riparian Owners Association is set for November 14 at Barstow High School to decide on protective actions. Meetings are led by Byron Waters and Grant Holcomb. official letter dated October 28, 1925 from State Division of Water Rights cautions on vesting and prior rights.
Yesterday 23 property owners in the Crooks addition signed a petition for the water company to extend its mains to the north part of Barstow. More signers were needed and it was hoped by T. G. Higgins circulating the petition that the required number would be reached this week.
Mr Wm Hodge spent several days in Los Angeles last week visiting friends and taking in local sights and events.
County Highway Commissioner J W Cole visited Barstow as State Highway Commissioners assumed control of the Arrowhead route Daggett Yermo to the Nevada line The state now fields a crew near the Nevada line Once the road is in good condition traffic will rise and draw thousands from Las Vegas and southern Nevada to California beaches through Yerma Daggett and Barstow
The trial of Joseph H. Watt(s) cost the county $6,129.27, with potential for about $12,000 if a new trial is granted. Audits show months of investigation and witnesses brought from Oakland, San Francisco, and Detroit at public expense.
The Antler Club held its annual masquerade ball at Barstow Grammar School auditorium drawing masked dancers from Barstow and nearby towns. Judges awarded prizes for best dressed folk and costumes with Mrs Claud Green winning best dressed lady. Joe Fredericks of Ludlow posed as the Chinese gentleman winner, Mr Perry of Yermo as the devil, and Miss Pledtic Kiry as the humorous Hulu Hulu dancer. The evening closed after the home sweet home waltz as tired dancers left.
Mrs. Charley Raftery hosted a birthday surprise for Mr. Raftery on October 24. Eleven guests were present including Mr. and Mrs. Harry Love, Mr. and Mrs. Stevens, Mr. and Mrs. George Simon, Mr. and Mrs. Raftery, Dorothy Stevens, Barbara Raftery, and Dean Raftery.
