Cows Die From Wire and Nails, County Study Finds

A Farm Bureau and Extension Service survey of 3,840 San Bernardino cows in 45 herds shows 75 percent of dairy cow deaths due to wire and nails. One year total death count was 113 cows, with 85 deaths from stomach puncture by wire. The county could lose about 45,750 dollars yearly at 150 dollars per cow. Recommendations urge hay suppliers to remove short wire, equip baling machines with canvas bags, and improve feed safety to save valuable cows.
