The firm declares 1899 the best mercantile year yet and launches with a stock worth $6500. They promise most of it is new, with value far above last year. The list includes paper, books, bibles, envelopes, pencils, slates, broom, buckets, shoes, hats, shirts and various undergarments at low prices.
A. L. Mills announces a new year motto to Hew to the line on prices and offer credit only to reliable customers. With paid articles and funds for bills, he pledges honest terms, lower prices, and square dealing despite hard times.
The ad promises a strong millinery line and a greatly enlarged dry goods and notions department to offer the newest styles. It highlights shoes men’s hats umbrellas and parasols as key stock and invites friends to visit W.F. Adams and Jnc F. Howard who are partnered in the venture.
Mr R FE L Hawkins of Forsyth visited Barnesville last week to assess opening a tinning and plumbing shop with waterworks and electric light supplies. He comes highly recommended and seeks a store room in town, with hopes to locate in Barnesville and serve local needs.
Grey Britt, accused of stealing a sack of flour from Mr Gray’s store, fled as Mr Willis pursued him. A boy reported the theft, Grey was caught and jailed after a chase, tried for larceny before Justice Murphy, and taken to Zebulon by Bailiff Stallings.
Judge Hammond preached at the Baptist church Sunday morning on I am made all things to all men to save some. Rev. R. E. Hammond of Griffin delivered the message, and Dr. Brittain, the pastor, preached the evening service to a attentive congregation.
Mr. W. BL Veal conducts a brisk cattle trading operation, buying cows from across the country and shipping them by train. On Saturday a large crowd gathered to watch the herd driven onto a car, with a bridge laid to the platform and the cattle persuaded aboard. He also shipped two kid goats. Veal is described as a hustling young businessman making a success of the enterprise.
Iverson & Sterne factory at Milner claims best back band on the market with no padding, producing up to 50 dozen daily. The piece praises home industry and the local enterprise for its competitive edge and success.
Frank Askin of Brent in Monroe county married Carrie Horne of Horne Georgia in Monroe county with Rev W W Childs officiating. The bride is described as charming from a respected Monroe family and a former pupil of the Joseph K Johnson Institute, well known in Yatesville.

The well known Barnesville resident James M. Horne of Horne in Monroe County lies critically ill. A prosperous farmer, he served as Monroe County commissioner until the current law and was justice of the peace for Redbone district. He was a delegate to the 1896 Democratic State Convention in Macon.
Mr J M Cochrane has accepted a position with the Coca Cola Company of Atlanta and will start on February first. He will likely base in a large western city though his territory is not yet fixed. An excellent salesman, he is expected to render top service. He leaves Barnesville soon to begin work.
A note warns that failure to pay by February 1 will lead to suit through the sender by attorney EDGAR L Rogers. The message threatens legal action over an outstanding account.
A man plans to move to Barnesville with a line of goods but cannot find space. Four new store rooms have been built recently, yet every shop in town is occupied. Building additional stores could be a viable investment for landowners with suitable lots.
Misses Mattie and Fayette Elliott have returned to their Cul loden home and plan to move to Barnesville by mid February locating in the back of the Maddux and Son store. They are well known and have long been patronized by the community.
Mr James W Thurman has secured a good position to teach school at Andersonville Georgia and has left to take charge of the school. We are glad he has been successful and wish him prosperity in his new field.
