The Old Year has passed with its successes and shortcomings, pains and pleasures, and the New Year arrives with plans and promises, work and wear, and possibilities for good and gain. We offer gratitude to God for goodness and to our customers who have and continued.
The Odd Fellows banquet on Wednesday evening attracted many members despite unfriendly weather. Al Atwater of Matthews Hotel arranged a cross shaped table with lavish dishes of oysters turkey and cranberry. Toasts honored Friendship Truth Love and Good of the Order with toastmaster C O Summers guiding the event.
Under the Barnesville Library Association, a drama is organized by local talent with Frank M. Stafford directing. Hunt's orchestra will supply music and proceeds go to the Library Association.
A 17 year old boy, Charlie Collier, was flung to the ground while attempting to swing onto a passing freight. He suffered a scalp wound and chest injuries but is not thought to be seriously hurt. The report notes several youths have been injured trying to steal rides on trains despite the danger.
A vintage advertisement extols Dr. Pierce's Common Sense Medical Adviser and Favorite Prescription as essential for female health. It claims the book is free with stamps, praises the medicine for maternity and vitality, and includes a customer letter praising relief from female weakness and back pain. Pellets are touted as a cure for constipation with druggists selling them.
The Georgia Underwear Mills in Barnesville held its annual meeting with full stock representation. Directors elected include Edward Elder as president J L Kennedy as vice president A O Murphey as secretary and treasurer Col J J Rogers and Dr C H Perdue. The 1898 year was the best in its history with a six percent dividend declared and a similar addition to surplus.
Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Gray hosted Miss Carter of Macon for an evening of music conversation and a literary game. About sixty book titles were catalogued at five tables with No. 4 winning and prizes awarded to John T. Middlebrooks and Prof. Henry M. Fletcher.
Special Services by Rev J S Vredenburg of Springfield NL continue at the Presbyterian church. Afternoon service begins at 3 15 and evening service at 7 p m. Vredenburg has preached in Barnesville before and is regarded as an interesting preacher.
Mr W C Jordan has refreshed his drug store by painting counters and shelving white giving the shop a modern, up to date appearance and credit to Barnesville.
Captain John F. Howard partners with Mr A L Mills for the year and invites all old friends and customers to call and trade. Howard has run a local business for over twenty years and prides himself on never losing a customer once gained.
New Deputy Sheriff J. T. Baker is appointed to replace resigning deputy R. A. Buchanan in Pike County. The resignation and appointment are officially noted.
