The old year has passed with its successes and short comings its pains and pleasures. The new year brings plans promises work wear and possibilities. We express gratitude to God for continued goodness and to our customers for their support.
On New Year’s Day at the bride’s home in Savannah, Walter S. Maynard married Annie Bowman Cramer. Maynard, a partner at W. T. Maynard & Co. bank and commander of the Quitman Guards of Forsyth, is Gordon Institute educated and well known in Barnesville. friends here extend congratulations.
In passing through our cemeteries a large number of new tombstones can be seen. Some of these are very handsome shafts. The care of the graves of the dead is essential to civilization and improvements are noted, though there is room for better upkeep and special care in the cities of the dead this year.
Mr. A. A. Murphey has made home improvements on Thomaston street. A new front yard fence has been erected, enhancing a residence noted for comfort and convenience in Barnesville.
In our small city much building continues with large dwellings cottages and tenements rising. Hus tling contractor A. O. Bennett has more on his hands than he can do, proving the town prospers despite hard times.
Rev. W S Stevens led a children's service at the Methodist church using blocks and a blackboard to illustrate sin’s weaknesses and Christ’s strength. After the service a church conference appointed committees for the coming year. Stevens is described as an earnest able preacher who has served Barnesville faithfully.
An advertisement extols the "Golden Medical Discovery" by Dr. Pierce as a fuel for life, claiming it enhances digestion and blood formation to energize the body. It cites Mr. F S Hughes of Junction New Jersey who credits six bottles of the medicine and four of its pellets with curing kidney and liver troubles after a life on fast trains.
The Pike County Board of Education met in Zebulon on Tuesday and discussed proposed changes to the school calendar. State Commissioner Glenn suggested a split session, but the board rejected it citing teachers’ unemployment. The five month term was approved as before. County Commissioner Elder presented the 1898 report and outlined next year’s work.
A new musical group named Hunts Orchestra has been formed in Barnesville to benefit the public with local talent. Leader is R. J. Hunt. Pianist will be chosen soon. Members include Harrold Murphey cornet Reid J. Hunt trombone Alva Matthews first violin Charles H. Perdue second violin Walter W. Spense bass violin Roy Blount snare drum.
Mr. Morgan Howard Jr. found a plow stock and singletree stolen from his field. He took the items from John Walker, a Black man, and had him arrested for larceny. Walker was tried before Justice Murphey, found guilty, and imprisoned.

The Barnesville Medical Society announces a unified fee bill with charges for visits, mileage, prescriptions, and surgery. It states charity work will be done but nonpaying patients will be refused services, and notes due by February 1 will go to an attorney for collection.
