Rescue attempt at Recorder's office sparks riot in city
The event centers on an alleged slave, Jesse Collier, as deputies Nash and Finch attempt to move him from the Recorder's office to jail. A crowd of blacks surged toward the officers shouting for his removal. One assailant cried to “settle it,” as a scuffle ensued prompting quick action by Boudi and Welch to restrain the rioters. Five principal agitators named Nichols, Jenning, Riley, and two unidentified. Abolitionists urged clemency but Justice Hopson ordered bail.
