An 1807 Augusta city ordinance establishes bread weight rules to curb price disparities with superfine flour. Bakers face fines up to twenty dollars for underweight or adulterated loaves and must yield substandard bread to the poor. The city marshal may inspect bakeries and seize faulty bread for redistribution.
