Lake embargo lifted as vast fleet moves on lakes
Sept. 11 in Mari Michigan The embargo on Lake Superior navigation ended after the steamer Douglas Houghton was sunk in the Sea passage last Tuesday. A vast fleet of over 200 vessels, largest ever on the lakes, began to move in two routes with ships under the American flag. The Houghton was driven against a limestone ledge after a collision with the Fritz, sealing the channel until dynamite blasts cleared the rock. The fleet stretched for more than 40 miles as they passed Haylake in a wide procession to avoid collisions.
