A dispute over closing hours erupts as barbers in Atlantic fail to reach a unanimous 8 o clock closing plan. Writ of replevin case ends in compromise over 200 dollars. Windy Jones obituary notes death. Dr. H. Maccomber returns from Europe.
Yesterday afternoon word arrived of Isaac A. Jones death at his daughter’s home in Omaha. Remains were brought to Lewis for funeral services and interment there. He had been in poor health and the family troubles and Jan suite worries worsened his condition. He was carried into court during a recent trial and had just gone to Omaha to live with his children. Death was due to nephritis. Jones was a well known county figure long remembered in communities where he lived.
Dr and Mrs HH K Macomber of Pasadena arrived in the city this morning and will stay a few days with Dr A P Macomber. Former Atlantic residents, they return from five months travel in Europe, where Dr Macomber has built a leading medical practice in California. Also reported, Walter Litterst, son of Chas Litterst, died at his father's east Sixth street home aged 16 years and 1 month from rheumatic heart disease. Funeral tomorrow at 2 pm from the home conducted by Rev E E Reed. Viewing hours 11 to 12 tomorrow morning.
Mr and Mrs B I Boyle left on the flyer this morning bound for California. They expect to be away seven months or more and plan to visit Los Angeles and other western sights. A large number of relatives and friends were at the depot to bid them farewell.
A courteous note wishes recipients a pleasant trip and a happy return, expressing goodwill and safe travels.
Wm Thielen of Extra and other residents visited the city. Fred Alexanders advertises second hand school books. bargains on writing paper 15 cts per lb. Sheriff Hill returned from Clarinda with E B Gifford to the asylum. Several locals travel to Council Bluffs, Audubon, and Des Moines for visits and business. A license to wed was granted in Council Bluffs to Edward B Black and Amelia Miller. Multiple moves, travel updates, and community notices recounted, with engagements and public matters noted.
Treasurer T W Brown with Deputy Clarence reports September tax collections totaled about 65,000 with 15,343.06 allocated to Atlantic city. State share 7,805.76. City and school allocations split across departments, school funds exceed 21,000 for county, and total county cash balance near 56,000 for schools. Coal famine fears prompt Des Moines coal talks and October campaign events featuring Geo D Perkins of Sioux City.
