George W. Beavers surrendered in New York on the fourth indictment in Washington accusing him of conspiracy to defraud the government via contracts for canceling machines from the Doremus Machine Company. The charge claims Beavers, on February 27, 1901, received 500 from George E. Green and Willard Doremus in a corrupt pact to push the postal department to buy the machines at an excessive price. Beavers posted 5000 bail for a preliminary examination set October 27.
Crawfordsville Ind October 8 Manager Eller of the Wabash football team received a letter today from H. T. Watson manager of the Rose Polytechnic League stating they consider football a social game and would not play if Gordon a colored player was allowed to participate. The game has been cancelled.
The Peabody fund board of trustees convened at the Fifth Avenue hotel in New York for its annual meeting. Chief Justice Fuller opened the session at noon with a roll call featuring Samuel A Green James D Porter J P Morgan William Doane Morrin Jessup W A Courtney Henderson Somerville Charles Fenner Daniel Gillman George F Hoar Hoke Smith.
Cleveland to Attend Funeral Former President Grover Cleveland left Princeton to attend the funeral of former Postmaster General Bissell of Buffalo. Arch bishop Kain in St Agnes hospital, physicians report midnight condition unchanged.
In Lexington, James H Tillman testified for an hour and is expected to remain on the stand tomorrow. Defense witnesses continued as Mahaffry and Heitman offered accounts of events, including cigar incidents and a tense view of Gonzales’s military career.
Thomas Brewer aged 17 died at Albany hospital from a small rifle bullet wound received in May 1802 in an accidental shooting by a playmate. He had been in hospital care for seventeen months as doctors pursued treatment in a barn tub and other procedures.
New York October 8 Edward M Grout resists a Republican and Citizens Union bid to displace him as controller. The fusion ticket was filed with the board of elections without Grout or Fomes protesting. Grout accuses Platt aligned Democrats of mob rule and vows to fight removal, urging fair minded citizens to judge the leadership. Frederick W Hinrichs accepts fusion nomination for comptroller. Tammany Hall nominates John W Ahearn for borough president. Retail Druggists elect officers and back tax cuts on grain alcohol and duty-free imported alcohol for arts use.
William B Given tendered his resignation as president of the Lancaster County Railroad and Light Company amid rumors of major accounting discrepancies. Reported shortages amount to about $100,000 or more. Given has long been seen as wealthy and active in large scale stock market operations.
In Mohileff government near Orahu on a Wednesday about a thousand Jews attempted to rescue prisoners being moved to the railway. Mounted police drew swords and repulsed the attack. Ten arrests were made.
Philadelphia October 8. The executive board of the National Congress of Mothers focused on organizing child saving and child culture work. Appointments were made for New Hampshire Wisconsin and Delaware with sessions at the national president Mrs Frederick Scho residence.
At a Washington conference the president and the international commission discussed sending Jenks to China to present a recommendation to adopt the gold exchange standard. The plan aims to influence China with the proposed monetary change, with a probable sale in late October.

Wesley Hedges traveling with his wife and three children on a Big Four train from Jacksonville to La Harpe, Illinois, suddenly becomes deranged mid voyage. He leaps from a moving car during a 60 mile per hour run, disappears into darkness after a window plunge, is found near dead and later violent outside the station. Police subdue him after a stone-armed chase through Crawfordsville, and he is jailed.
Georgia man J W Taylor of Lutherville receives a jewel as the 32nd triennial convocation of the General Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons adjourns in Little Rock Arkansas. New officers installed by Reuben E Lemon of Toledo Ohio. Charters granted to two new chapters in Idaho and one in San Juan Puerto Rico. Havana Manila charters pending. Delegates and ladies visit a cotton plantation and enjoy a barbecue before heading to Hot Springs for further entertainment in Arkansas.
Albany October 5 Miss Mabel Martin niece of Mrs Bradley Martin of New York will wed next week in Albany hospital The wedding was delayed when she was taken for an operation but the date was not changed
