Montgomery Ala October 9 Ten million two hundred seventy one thousand bales the estimate of the present cotton crop made by the Association of Southern Commissioners of Agriculture adjourned here today after three days of session The state estimates list Georgia at 1 300 000 bales other totals include Alabama 1 000 000 Arkansas 870 000 Florida 60 000 Louisiana 750 000 Mississippi 1 500 000 Missouri 50 000 North Carolina 628 000 Oklahoma 200 000 South Carolina 900 000 Tennessee 300 000 Virginia 16 000 Texas and Indian Territory 3 000 000 The association passed resolutions including preventing boll weevil import from Texas into the cotton belts urging railroads to help farmer institutes and better agricultural education and cattle tick extermination efforts.
In Birmingham the Church of the Advent faces opposition from Bishop C. M. Beckwith over calling Rev. Quincy Ewing of Greenville Miss. The bishop objects to Ewing due to a past marriage ceremony for a divorced minister whose wife later remarried. The vestry backs Ewing and a clash with the bishop is anticipated as Ewing plans to preach next Sunday. A committee may confer with the bishop once located.
New Orleans October 9 The screw men strike nears a crisis as many non union workers prepare to sail on cotton ships under police protection and federal injunctions. Both sides vow to press the fight to a finish.
London October 8 an heir was born on Wednesday to the marquis of Donegal aged 80 and his young Halifax born wife Miss Twining aged 22 scarce a year after their marriage the marquis had twice married before without issue The notable birth follows a lengthy period without an heir and highlights the couple's union at the start of the year
Public reprimand before the entire force marked a contentious police board session. Captain Moon and Captain Thompson faced charges over an alleged spat with Detective Kilpatrick and insubordination. The board found Moon guilty on the insubordination charge and Moon was accused of spreading the story while Thompson faced separate charges.
The board unanimously suspended Captain Moon for sixty days from September 24 and Captain Thompson for thirty days from September 24. Station Sergeant Manly faces charges for circulating false reports and is suspended. Moon found guilty of insubordination and spreading false reports. Thompson found guilty of insubordination. Moon found not guilty of tipping Lula Green about a prosecution. Mayor admonishes officers to uphold authority, with reprimands to be administered publicly and breaches punished, as the full board observes.
Dr. Amos Fox, chairman of Atlanta police commissioners, was fined 5.75 dollars by Recorder Broyles after a public dispute with Deacon H A Etheridge at Edmondson's drug store over remarks about Dr. Broughton. Witnesses testified to Fox's generally good character while Etheridge described profane language and threats of a fight. The judge noted public disorder and upheld the fine.
In Griffin a pursuit ended when Officer Williams confronted a strange man said to be John Harris, murder suspect in Polisieman Hans Drasbach’s case. The suspect drew and fired, Williams returned fire, killing him. Griffin residents identified the dead man as Harris, matching police descriptions.
