A funnel shaped terror struck Snyder residents as they slept, killing several and injuring others in a sudden, deadly disaster reported by local observers. Rescue and investigation efforts followed as authorities sought liquid sources and safety explanations.
May 10 dispatches say Snyder Oklahoma, a town of about 1000 in Kiowa County, was struck by a tornado. Wires are down, relief trains are being sent from Chickasha Hobart and other towns, initial reports claim five hundred dead and many injured.
The Railroad Commission rejected port rate proposals that would have harmed Atlanta. The commission found the rates unjust and unreasonable, noting Savannah and Brunswick would gain advantages distorting the Georgia freight market. Commissioner Brown argued the panel serves all communities, not just Atlanta, and that lowering Atlanta rates would harm other cities. The Georgia railroad commission debated intrastate rate changes, aiming to finalize a practical schedule. Stakeholders from Atlanta stove works, King Hardware, and multiple rail lines pressed for, or protested, the reactivation of circular 304, which shifted stove rates to lower classes and promised earlier reform.
President Roosevelt was the guest of honor at a banquet by Chicago Democrats at the Iroquois Club on May 10. Speakers praised him despite past political battles, and the event portrayed unity among foes as the president expressed plans to push for the Panama Canal and railroad national control.
A Chicago protest signed by Shea of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and labor leaders urged President Roosevelt to resist deploying federal troops in the labor dispute at Oneill Towers. The missive warned against federal power and appealed for arbitration, while Roosevelt spoke to a banquet audience about unity and duty, rejecting calls for immediate force.
Eastern express of the Pennsylvania Railroad collided with a freight train at South Harrisburg at 1:10 AM. Two dynamite laden freight cars exploded, wreckage and fire followed, leaving fifty killed and about one hundred injured. Debris and chaos spread as rescue efforts commenced.
