A Kansas tornado near Marquette fatally struck at midnight, killing 29 people as residents slept. Rescue teams searched the debris in a storm of fear and damage, while authorities assessed the devastation and begun reviewing emergency response.
A severe tornado tore through Marquette Kansas on May 9, killing many occupants and injuring about forty four. The disaster wrecked part of the town, with a makeshift morgue in a furniture store room and twenty five bodies brought in by nightfall. Dozens are seriously hurt, several dying later, as rescue workers and the Lutheran pastor attended the injured and accounted for the missing amid widespread destruction.
Italian officials announce spending to defend Anna Valentina in New Jersey, arguing unfair trial and treaty rights. Federal review will be sought and a prominent New Jersey lawyer engaged. Governor and Italian ambassador push to delay execution while U S courts hear the case.
The Georgia Sociological Society met in the Carnegie library basement for its fourth annual session. Dr Dowman denounced Atlanta and national public schools as stifling, urged moral and physical training, and warned against non religious schooling. Speakers included Prof William M Slaten and Dr A W Stirling, with papers on pedagogy and Japanese physical culture.
New York May 9 reports say William Daly Juggle with a $50000 life policy on a Boston man. Detectives allege a forged signature and conspiracy with an Equitable employee led to $27000 being stolen from the Equitable Fire Assurance Society. The suspect, Samuel Lobley, is said to have used aliases Edwards Robert C Henderson and Father Smith. A second loan of $27000 involved the same scheme, with the insured policyholder Willard Cation of Brookline, Massachusetts.
Ira Green and William Dillon were hanged at Bellefonte today for the murder of Jerry Conde, a turnkey in the Centre Jail. Fully about a thousand persons witnessed the execution as part of a grim early May capital punishment case. The same dispatch notes a separate visit by Japanese Prince Arisugawa and Princess to King Victor Emmanuel at the Quirinal in Rome, with casual royal cordiality and remarks of an impending Berlin stop.
Washington May 9 Secretary Taft sharply voiced opposition to government ownership and urged railways to respect public needs. He warned a failure to legislate proper rates would fuel a campaign harming railroads, while Secretary Taft pressed for a tribunal to fix maximum rates and enforce anti discrimination laws.
