Adel center tragedy ends in double murder suicide
A white man identified as John Hewitt killed his wife Lessie Wilkes Hewitt and wounded her sister Ira Parrish in Adel before shooting himself. The couple had distant residence and prior domestic trouble. Hewitt, a member of the Wilkes family, died by suicide after a posse closed in. The incident occurred mid day in Adel, with Hewitt also shooting Wilkes’s son in the elbow and wounding W D Wilkes.
