Stone Defends Coastwise Tolls Exemption Debate
Washington May 5 Senator Stone Missouri said he would vote for tolls exemption repeal after backing the 1912 exemption, arguing the Baltimore platform opposed subsidies but approved exempting coastwise vessels. He challenged the idea the policy violated the Hay-Dauncefote treaty and accused some in Congress of misreading the party platform. He warned repealing now could force a struggle over subsidies and criticized partisan rhetoric.
