Halifax May 4 an unnamed steamer was found burning from stem to stern about 200 miles south of Cape Fact and with no signs of life aboard. The Seydlitz of Bremen reported the scene and circled the vessel while heavy smoke hid its name. The Olympic and Franconia near the area offered help, but no vessel dispatched a distress message. No wireless distress from any other steamer was confirmed, and transshipment appeared feasible if crews were rescued.
