Two Wounded Sailors Die at Vera Cruz

Washington May 5 two sailors wounded during the Vera Cruz occupation have died Harry Fulham fireman and Clarence R Hirchberger seaman both of the battleship Utah died from gunshot wounds and amputation complications Pulliam of Pulaski Virginia 32 enlisted February 23 1931 died from injuries with lower body paralysis and shot from above Hirchberger died after leg amputation as reports from Admiral Badger indicate the remaining wounded were reported as doing well

Mystery of burning ship solved after Cunard Franconia rescue

Thirteen survivors from the Columbian were saved by the Franconia after a Sunday night fire aboard while en route from Antwerp to New York. The chief steward Matthews died, and a second boat with the captain and officers disappeared. Authorities estimate 40 to 50 aboard, with 33 confirmed aboard two boats. Captain Miller of the Franconia reported proceeding to Boston with survivors and 1,783 passengers.

Rockefeller Money Spurned by Senate

Washington May 5 The senate without enough votes to roll call added a constrain that funds in the agricultural appropriation bill may not be used with contributions from the general education board or similar bodies. The board funded by John D Rockefeller Jr received 42 million dollars and had given about 250 thousand dollars yearly to salaries of government workers in farm demonstration and boll weevil work. Senator Oliver protested denying citizens’ contributions for any federal work and Senator Martin blocked the anti Rockefeller move by procedure. Senator Ashurst attackedRockefeller earnings and condemned wealth patronage of the government tied to labor unrest and strikes.

Washington Inquires About Consul Silliman

Greater Hospital Bonds Are Beaten At Polls Tuesday

With returns complete, county Democratic primary results show Wheeler Mangum re-elected sheriff by 292 votes over Captain W. M. Mayo and L. Co. Wright. Mangum received 5,700 of 12,035 votes. Mayo 5,409. Wright 1,226. Grady hospital bond issue of 760000 was defeated. Oscar Mills and Tull C. Waters contest county commissioner seat. Dr. WoEi Gilbert and Charles G. Turner lead for at large board seats. Voting brisk, orderly. Mangum declared winner in three candidate race.

Mexicans Flee Salina Cruz as Denver Arrives

Report from officers aboard the gunboat Annapolis relayed by the South Dakota says Salina Cruz residents fled in terror when the US cruiser Denver docked April 21 amid anti American demonstrations. Sixteen refugees, including women and children, were aboard Annapolis en route from Mazatlan to the United States. The British consul was said to be acting for American interests.

Wheeler Mangum defeats Mayo in sheriff race by 291

The county election produced notable results with Wheeler Mangum defeating Captain Mayo by a 291 vote plurality for sheriff. Uncle Andy Stewart beat Charles I. Branan for tax collector while T. M. Armisstead won the tax receiver contest over two opponents. The county commission race between Hightower and Turner drew the day’s most exciting contest. Quiet election day concluded.

Fulton County Dem Primary Yields Close Sheriff Contest

In a three month campaign, Sheriff incumbent C Wheeler Mangum narrowly defeats Captain W M Mayo and L O G Wright amid 12 335 ballots. Mayo wins most country districts while Mangum takes only four of fourteen polling places. Bonds for Grady hospital fail with 7 809 votes of 14 462 registration, missing two thirds by 1 969 votes. Andy Stewart defeats Charles Branan for tax collector by 2 927, and T M Armistead elected receiver with a 440 plurality and about 2 000 votes cast.
