A December New York riot in Harlem saw armed black residents clash with white youths over an incident involving two colored girls. Fourteen blacks were arrested and four whites, including a policeman, were seriously wounded as stones clubs pistols and razors were used. Police intervened, driving the attackers back to tenements amid continued gunfire and window shouts.
A deadly shooting in Duck Hill Mississippi began when Frank Royal and his wife visited JS Mills. Royal, seeking amusement, opened a door as Miss Beatrice Mills warned intruders. Miss Mills fired, hitting Royal in the heart and killing him instantly, the night ending in tragedy.
Bazil Ind December 25. In defending his mother from assault by her drunken husband Richard Watkins returned home and began abusing his wife. He grabbed a hatchet, advanced on her, and attacked. Theodore Watkins fired a revolver at his father, hitting him near the heart and causing death. The boy, 12 or 13, surrendered to police saying he acted to save his mother and was justified.
Peter A. Hallenbeck, a Columbia County farmer, was shot to death in his home by three men believed to be after a woman named Fanis keen. The attackers fled toward Catskill station after firing into Hallenbeck’s body. Local farmers have faced poultry thieves, suggesting a possible motive.
A local report states Abe, an elderly resident, attacked his mother with an axe last night injuring an 8 year old and a 5 year old who were alone with her. Abe has been taken into custody charged with the serious incident amid claims he was drunk and weak minded.
In Detroit on December 25 a 16 year old girl drank strychnine from a bottle while in a saloon. Police had just taken her into custody a few minutes earlier. She died soon after at Emergence hospital.
Potts Texas December 23 Rev J H ecinton wing near Deport was called at an early hour this morning and shot to death by a crowd of men. He claimed to recognize some and gave the names to the officers before dying. Also York December 2 The man John Bell a t eater shot and killed his wife in the kitchen of their Brook home then shot at a policeman and confessed the crime claiming Bite had returned from Scotland to her parents and had been untrue to him.
In Pine Bluff Arkansas on December 25 Moses Solmson shot and killed George Stubblefield at 7 o clock. The incident follows a prior killing of Carl Stubblefield by Meyer Solmson and stems from warnings of threats and a confrontation near Solmson's home. Solmson later surrendered to the sheriff.
In Nacogdoches Texas on December 25 a Christmas crowd fired public safety weapons during celebrations. A stray bullet hit Mitch Bird 13 causing death. The boy’s father then shot into the crowd wounding Ed Lee Reuben Chandler and Edgar Moore all Black. One of the wounded is dying.
In Little Rock Arkansas on December 25 three Black people were fatally hurt near Wilmety after a quarrel over a land sale. Martin Davis and Jeff Davis, cousins, fought a serious duel. James Thompson, a friend, was struck and fatally hurt by Arthur Davis, the father of Martin Davis. Arthur Davis is in gall.
In Hot Springs Arkansas on December 25 Frank Mallory proprietor of a restaurant was shot and killed by saloonkeeper Frank Chilcutt who claims self defense. The incident follows Mallory's alleged drinking and a fatal shooting near Coxville Texas where Lon Baker died in a duel and Jim Caffey was wounded.
A report from New York notes Hugh J McGowan president of the Indianapolis Street Railway Company leads efforts to develop a trolley system linking New York and St Louis. The Murdocks of Lafayette and Frank DeHnas Robison of Cleveland are said to be connected with McGowan, with plans said to have matured during his recent New York visit.

United States Minister Thomas reports December 19 ceremonies in Stockholm and Christiania for Alfred Nobel prizes. Awards went to Roentgen in physics, van ’t Hoff in chemistry, Behring in medicine, Sully-Prudhomme in literature, and Passy and Tonart in peace. Diplomas presented by royal figures amid a large audience. Also reports Judge Neal killed by a horse in Skittery Maine. sister married to Florida federal judge Locke.
Four lives were lost when the Memphis steamer Sun burned to the waterline early today in the Memphis and Fulton trade. D N Rainer and Mrs D N Rainer of Old River Ark, Mrs G M Timbs of Richardson Landing Tenn, and a three month old child perished. Timbs identified his wife after her burned body was recovered. baby’s body not found. The Sun, with freight and passengers, was bound from Fulton. about a dozen stayed aboard. captain George W Phillips and clerk John Bronner owned the vessel.
Gloucester Maata December 5 Eight men are believed dead in the probable foundering of the schooner Eliga EE Parkhurst of this port. The Parkhurst, commanded by Captain D McKinnon, sailed from the Bay of Islands Newfoundland November 24 for Gloucester with crew of all men and one passenger Lawrence McDonald. The vessel carried herring when a gale on November 25 is believed to have driven it to its doom.
Detroit December 25 Dr C G Jennings reports General Alger has safely passed the first and most critical stage of his operation last Sunday He may face dangerous developments for about a week though none are expected He had a comfortable day with no fever and will receive liquid nourishment tonight

New York December 26 The marriage of Miss Eleanor Rawls daughter of the late Dr Edmund S Rawls of Marion Alabama to Athole Burnett Reader a London broker was announced. The ceremony was performed by Rev George Houghton at the Little Church Around the Corner on November 9. Mrs Reader will sail for England with her husband after closing her Wall Street office. The bride, daughter of the discoverer of sulphuric ether for anaesthesia, rose from stenographer to finance, meeting Mr Reader in London where their two year secret engagement blossomed into marriage.
In Havana on December 25 Cuban veterans hosted a banquet for officers of the United States fleet. General Carlos Garcia presided while Governor General Wood toasted a future republic. Rear Admiral Higginson praised Cuban hospitality and the fleet’s role in peace. Captain McCallapaia lauded Garcia and Cuban courage during the war.

In Bristol Tennessee on December 25 Thomas T Templeton shot and killed Robert Moore ex Confederate soldier after a post trial pursuit. The two men met for a fist fight yesterday and Moore was fined. Templeton surrendered and awaits further action. Cleveland's condition improves slightly in Princeton. Ex president shows movement and interest in Christmas gifts.
