Cecil Rhodes, managing director of the British South Africa Company, has purchased the Dalham Hall estate near Newmarket. The property includes a Georgian residence built in 1740 and about 3,475 acres, valued at roughly £100,000. The Affleck family held the estate for two centuries, and the sale places the residence of Viscount Amicels? in new ownership.
This morning at about 2:80 o clock two men at 11 East Fair Street attacked Officer George Coleman as he entered to arrest three Hightower brothers. He was struck with lead slugs, knocked down, and his pistol stolen but fired a single shot. A nearby officer aided him. Coleman was taken to Grady Hospital with severe head wounds. Joe and Will Hightower were captured and arrested.
Desperadoes from Logan County, led by Walter Adams and John Mullins, rode through Dungess West Virginia firing revolvers. Constable Dilton and John Mullins were killed. Adams wounded and fled. Sheriff Williamson leads a posse pursuing Adams amid rising, tense calls for lynching.
Chicago report says Edna Wallace Hopper’s brother Thomas Wallace relinquished his claims to her fortune of over 200000 for 3500 cash and 100 a month. He had lived in Chicago, ran a saloon, and was a joint heir. The mother Mrs Dunsmur left most of the estate to Edna, with 50000 to Thomas to be paid at 45. The will probated after Mrs Dunsmur’s death left Edna the bulk of the fortune.
December 24. Secretary Long said the president may drop the matter of retired officers criticizing the Schley verdict. Edgar S. Maclay, a naval historian and civil service worker, is removed from the Brooklyn Navy Yard after refusing to resign. Maclay’s letter to Long defends his regular appointment and seeks due charges and a chance to answer.
George Neal, of Stokes County, saved his cousin Ames Neal from dying in a fire after the maniac locked in his house and threatened neighbors. Four times he fled back into the flames, finally captured. The house and belongings burned. Ames enclosed for transfer to a hospital. George Neal sustained minor burns.
