Rev J L Scully of Savannah who conducted meetings at Emmanuel church in Athens has accepted the call to be rector of Trinity church in Columbus. He will leave Savannah for Columbus on November 1. Parishioners in Columbus welcome him while Savannah mourns his departure.
The night college of the Young Men's Association begins Monday October 12. Prospective students should see the secretary. Spanish courses taught by Prof. Lastras of the University headline offerings alongside commercial classes, bookkeeping, arithmetic, penmanship, and shorthand. Advanced and parish courses, drawing, graphic work, and business grammar are scheduled, with classes limited to ten to twelve students and led by local instructors.
Clarke's exhibit praised by visitors may be sent to the Georgia State Fair in Macon after consideration by fair authorities. Fundraising for freight and supervision is underway with several gentlemen pledging support. Calvin applauds the fair's progress and urges Clarke County's item to join the Macon lineup to compete for top prizes.
Lucy Cobb Institute reveals September honor roll with rankings across Senior Latin and English, Junior Latin, Sophomore English, and Freshman and Academic sections. Notable names include Boswell, Mell, Ware, Gerdine, Dozier, Comer, Wadley, Benedict, Chen ey, Butler, Erwin, Hulme, Henley, Nickerson, Delbridge, Dorsey, Hutchins, Barnett, Philpot, and Brightwell.
The Northeast Georgia Fair awarded prizes for mules colts fillies jacks and stallions. Top accolades went to Athers Toe & Coal Co and R T Lendemap for beat pair mules best single mule to A H Hodgson and Athens Ice & Coal Co. for runner ups. M J Robinson won multiple honors including best Georgia raised mule and best colt and filly foals. Awards also went to Mayaville Stock Co O J Hood and other local breeders for 1902 1903 foals and stallions with R E Branch and W T Anthony receiving additional recognitions.
Yesterday afternoon the regular monthly meeting of the mayor and council convened with Mayor Rhodes and Aldermen Weatherford Lipscomb and Wonderav present. Lacking a quorum, the session adjourned to Monday after noon at 3:30.
In mayor's court yesterday several fines were issued for drunken disturbances on Jackson street. Will Burroughs, a white man, paid 7.90 dollars while Wash Boot t, colored, owed 2.50. Jim Bailey, colored, was fined 5.75 for attempting to cut Charlotte Williams. A Vermont man, LeQuinn of Cavendish, Vermont, was shaken by constipation and later cured by Dr King's Now Life Pills, sold at local druggists.
Agricultural displays will be judged today to determine premium winners across Groups 1 to 7 and 17 to 32. Clarke county is favored for county exhibits with several individual premiums, while groups cover field crops cereals root crops cotton forage hams pumpkins sugar cane and cane syrup. Manufacturers and merchants displays in Groups 17 to 82 offer many notable entries for judging.
The first issue of The Georgian a high grade magazine from UGA’s literary societies appears neatly printed with editors Lucien Goodrich as editor in chief R P Brooks and E Lee Worsham as associate editors and John B Gamble as business manager The issue lists contributors including L P Goodrich Samuel Heath R M Bart Arthur L Hardy and others.
Night at the fair grounds offers free entry with cheap grand stand seating. The program features aerial acts, a trick house, and casting acts highlighted by brilliant illuminations. Moore and Gilmore thrill the crowd as performers. a moonlight balloon ascent debuts as a novelty tonight.
The first batch of the new water pipe has arrived and the balance will follow in a few days. Work on the duplicate main from the station to Cleveland avenue waits on the Southern railroad’s right of way. Once the Southern replies, laying will begin.
The Young Women of the Confederacy hosted a Friday night entertainment at Winnie Davis Hall. They cleared 125 dollars, proceeds to furnish the reception room in Winnie Davis Hall.
Boggs Chapel Sunday School in Decatur held a reception for the Orphans Home and raised sixty dollars for the institution. Dr RB Wade, superintendent, extends thanks to all who assisted.
At Cobb Delaney Camp United Confederate Veterans meeting in the city, delegates were chosen to represent the camp at the U C V reunion in Augusta next month. The selected delegates are Messrs M Herrington J E Ritcb J F Payne and J P Fort. The Cobb Delaney Camp will be well represented at the Augusta gathering.
A private letter from Athens reports the death of Dr. 8 K Lidstone a former Athens resident. The letter says his boat capsized on a Maine lake throwing his body into the water and never being found, only his coat and vest recovered. He was long a known optician in this city.
A large new gong has been placed at the waterworks plant to replace the old one, which was too small to be heard when the electric machinery runs. The new gong is expected to improve efficiency and service to the city.
Dr Archelas H Mitch ell oldest living University of Georgia alumnus died at his Summerfield Alabama home within two weeks of his 96th birthday. Born October 15 1807 near Athens he entered UGA in 1823 and graduated 1828 with classmates including General Robt Toombs and Judge Junius Hillyer.
Judges yesterday awarded prizes for coach and carriage horses roadsters saddlers and equipages. First premium for best coach and carriage went to Mrs Ferdinand Phimisy second to W 8 Holman Co. Roadster mare Walter H Jones roadster gelding J H Haughton and best two horse two seated equipage Col W J Morton. Mrs O B Griffith won best saddle gelding and best saddle stallion mare or gelding. The best pony and vehicle for children will be awarded Saturday morning.
Collett and Ingle have dissolved by mutual consent. N W Collett will run the Athens Steam Laundry while J W Ingle operates the Climax Knitting Mill. The partners are praised for past success and extended well wishes from friends.
Mrs. Shy aged eighty five passed away Sunday morning in this city after a long illness. She was mother to W H Shy and J N Shy and had been a consistent member of the Methodist church. Her remains were taken to Shady Dale for interment yesterday morning with fitting funeral services.
Watkinsville Ga October 8 Mr Tinney O W Crow says a letter from jockey Yerby Johnson of St Louis reports Annie Laurie the cream white trotting mare of Ella Wheeler Wilcox will be in Atlanta with Mrs Wilcox who later drove the horse around town.
