Col Wade, cattle and agricultural agent of the Southern Railway, spoke in the chancellor's lecture room to students and others about cattle raising. He highlighted advantages of local stock, better barns, foods, and lands, urging young men to seize political opportunity to build themselves up through a strong local industry.
A historic Athens fire engulfed the Rucker cotton compress last night, destroying about 2100 of 6600 bales of cotton and threatening adjacent warehouses. Firefighters and volunteers battled the blaze for hours, saving most buildings and hundreds of thousands in goods, with repairs and rebuilding planned for the affected area. Local heroes and the Athens fire department earned praise for halting the spread as the city watched in alarm.

Mrs Harriet Bishop widow of Henry Bishop died yesterday at her home near the Paper Mill in Athens after a period of ill health. Funeral at her residence at ten this morning with Rev E D Stone delivering the sermon. A brief paragraph touts Electric Bitters as a cure for various ailments with a testimonial from Phoebe Cherley of Paterson New Jersey.
Merchants weigh closing Saturday afternoon for Memorial Day celebrations. A plan suggests moving events to Thursday the 4th to involve students in the military program, avoid conflicts with oratorical contest in Atlanta, and ease cadet drills and Guards attendance, with a decision expected soon. Also included is an ad blurb for Kodol Dyspepsia Care from H. R. Palmer and others.
Yesterday morning Mrs B C Prather died after a long illness. Known as Miss Yarborough, she was beloved locally and her funeral was to be held at ten this morning at the residence. An advertisement for One Minute Cough Cure claims it cures throat troubles by liquifying mucus and removing the cause of illness.
A Colonel was fined and ordered to perform ten days of street work as punishment. The sentence appears in a brief, stark notice noting the disciplinary action and duration without extra background.
