The Athens Savings Bank records a payment of $50 to Tar Banner for prize winnings in The Banner's Dot Contest. Vouchers must be certified by judges J. F. Rhodes, A. H. Davison, and W. F. Dorsey. Athens Ga July 17 1902.
The notice invites subscriptions to the newspaper and entry in a dot counting puzzle with eighteen prizes. Three judges J F Rhodes A H Davison and W F Dorsey will decide winners and certify the official count by Mr Colburn in Athens.
The Athens Elks announce a major carnival from September 20 to October 4 with the Cincinnati Carnival Company handling attractions. Atlanta Rome and Spartanburg will supply acts and the event will use Athens streets with free lunch stand space for charitable organizations. Officers include J. Y. Carthers president and H. J. Rowe secretary. city council granted street use and advertising has begun.
The Athens community unanimously approves the carnival to Atlanta by Cincinnati Carnival Company. A committee will arrange low railroad rates with special trains on multiple days to attract big crowds, and subscriptions for attractions show strong progress though a few hundred dollars remain. Local Elks and citizens are urged to contribute to ensure the event becomes the region’s greatest carnival.
President Dudley M. Hughes says attendance will be large despite railroad trouble. Secretary Martin Calvin and Hughes aim for strong turnout with a program featuring speeches on stock raising, farming, plant breeding, drainage, and rural youth. Notable speakers include J. R. Van Busen, Pope Brown, Geo W Traitt, J. M. Smith, H. J. Webber, J. J Doughty, Col W. L. Pook, D. C. Buckhalter, J. M. Kimbrough, Mrs M L Myrick, J. J. Conner, and Col Jamvea Barrett.
Yesterday at six, convict Bob Miller fled the work gang at the compress. Officer B O Rose and his dogs pursued along Central tracks and Bobbin Mill road, catching Miller on Clayton Harris’s plantation after he changed into civilian clothes. He was returned to the gang and beaten, with the dogs praised for their performance.
